You don’t have to be a genius to have good ideas and share them. I also liked that Austin Kleon
addressed “lone genius” because we do live in a connected world where technology has made it
easy to reach out and connect with like minded people. Human beings are social creatures and
now more than ever it’s important to reach out and connect with people. As future educators we
shouldn’t be afraid to put our ideas out there especially if they could help other educators
whether you know them or not. I know in high school many of my teachers would go online for
I also liked that Austin Kleon mentioned that we shouldn’t be afraid to be amateurs.
Amateurs are the ones who have an unbridled passion for what they are doing and aren’t afraid
to try new things and put themselves out there. Even when we’ve been teaching for years we
shouldn’t be afraid to try new things and find new ways to teach and engage students in the
lessons. Being an amateur doesn’t even have to apply to us as teachers. We can be amateurs in
our personal lives just by putting ourselves out there and not being afraid to make mistakes or
look foolish.
The section of chapter one titled “you can’t find your voice if you don’t use it” I thought
was really important because it’s so true. If you want to find your voice you have to use it, even
if it means that you’ll make mistakes. We learn from our mistakes and how can we expect to
learn if we get everything right the first time. Making mistakes is essential to learning and
discovering who you are as a person. Finding your voice is not always easy and mistakes will be
made however those mistakes make us who we are. They help us find our voices. But we can’t
be afraid to make mistakes. We also can’t let our mistakes consume us. We have to know how to
learn from our mistakes and use them to help find our voices.
