Chapter 10 begins with a section entitled “Don’t quit your show”.

This is good advice

because you won’t get anywhere if you quit when things get hard. Just because you fail or things

don’t go the way you want doesn’t mean that you can’t come back from it even stronger. If you

want to succeed you also have to be able to fail. Things won’t always go the way you want on

the first try and that’s okay. We learn from our failures and rebound stronger. As future teachers

we have to be prepared to accept the fact that there is no way of predicting how a class will

respond to a lesson when you haven’t had the time to get to know the class. All you can do is

plan and hope for the best. If it doesn’t work out the way you want it to then be flexible, adjust

the plan and come back stronger. The next two sections of Chapter 10 go hand in hand. The first

of the two encourages readers to keep working even after they finish a project. This section

entitled “chain-smoke” focuses on the importance of perseverance and hard work. However in

the next section “go away so you can come back” Austin Kleon advises his readers against

becoming burnt out. The section highlights the importance of taking a break and giving yourself

time to regroup and recharge.

The final section of chapter 10 is entitled “begin again” is all about continued learning.

Austin Kleon tells his readers that “you can’t be content with mastery; you have to push yourself

to become a student again”(197). If you let yourself become content with the level you are at you

won’t learn anything or be able to dig deeper until you accept that there is always something new

to learn. When you continue learning don’t think of it as starting over. Istead think of it like

beginning again. Just because you tossed aside the old work doesn’t mean that you are starting

from scratch. After all you will still have the lessons you’ve learned from the old work and can

use those lessons to further your knowledge. This is important to us as future educators because

we can always change and improve our lesson plans and techniques we use in the classroom.
Each group of students is different from the last and learns in a different way. Which is why

lessons must be adapted to the students needs rather than what is convenient for the teacher. Just

because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean that it’s the way it has to be

done.
