Summary of journal:
The journal is about women giving births at age 45 or older, it came to the concerns of doctors
because it is continuously increasing. As a result, they have a higher risk for death and severe
medical attention during pregnancy and only few women recognize this. Prior to this study,
pregnancy outcomes among women in their 40’s or 50’s have common medical condition like
death, transfusion, myocardial infarction/ischemia, cardiac arrest, acute heart failure, pulmonary
embolism, deep vein thrombosis, acute renal failure, cesarean delivery, gestational diabetes, fetal
demise, fetal chromosomal anomaly, and placenta previa compared to women under 35. These
women need to undergo counseling concerning these risk before a couple wishes to have a child.
Personal Insights:
My deep intuitive understanding on this journal made me realize that family planning is very
important because this includes how many children, when or what age a couple wishes to have a
child. Perfect timing to have a child/ren is important to have less burden for couples and for the
child. This is the importance of counseling because you educate your clients how to navigate or
get through in complicated situations, you gave an idea what it might be happening, and help
them prepare for their pregnancy. Women should be counselled to for them to be aware the risks
of having a child in late ages.
Implication to Nursing Profession:
According to the study, most of women getting pregnant at 40’s are women not knowledgeable
enough about healthy pregnancy or people who lives in places where health care services are not
available. Nursing profession provide healthcare and practices nursing in a community setting
and this includes of imparting your knowledge to your patient. In order to educate a patient, a
nurse should be fully aware and fully understands the risks of getting pregnant at 40’s and the
interventions that needed to be taken.
Implication to Nursing Education:
This would help nurses to have a knowledge on how to educate mothers who are pregnant at 40s
or mothers who are planning to get pregnant. The journal gives facts of what is really happening
now that backs up the patient teaching of the nurse that getting pregnant at 40s is risky and needs
intensive medical attention. If a nurse provides poor education, it may lead to mistakes that are
costly for people’s health
Implication to Nursing Research:
For nursing research, the journal will be a baseline data or an idea for the next related research.
This will help them advance their knowledge about the complications of getting pregnant at 40's,
and continue to be updated and offer better patient care because patient care continuously
changes because of new proven researches. This can be a guide for future researchers who will
be conducting more in relevance of the topic and wants to improve the knowledge of nurses
about women getting pregnant at 40.
