Outline #3 Point by point

Addictive Smartphone Behavior in Young Adults

Introduction with thesis

Currently, we have the feeling that the smartphone is something very important in our

life, and some people cannot live without a smartphone, and this only proves that slowly

we are creating an addiction for them.

According to Pera (2020), in “the relationships between problematic smartphone use

(PSU), psychopathology, addictive personality, and online social engagement as regards

young adults, giving attention to predictive determinants of addictive behavior in

smartphone usage.” (Pera, 2020, 1), is a big problem that we are currently facing.

Summarize point 1: agree

Because of our personal experience, we agree with the idea of exposing this article

about the addiction in young adults by smartphone behavior use. The author says that

self-command, apprehension, depression, and dysfunctional impulsivities are the most

significant predictors of problematic smartphone use. An immoderate utilization of

smartphones leads to symptomatology reminiscent of psychological disorders generated

by substance addiction.
Summarize point 2: agree

Also, we can identify with the explanation about how our physical health can have

serious consequences such as tense spinal position because nowadays as students we

spend time with smartphones or computers.

Summarized point 3: agree

Young adults who spend time with their smartphone need to know that

smartphones are equipped to boost social media for intentions of assertiveness,

interpersonal relationship, and social attention, thus generating higher degrees of stress

and dependency associated with such devices.

Conclusion

Taking everything into consideration, we need to learn that the abuse of something is

very bad. The abuse of smartphones is almost like the abuse of drugs or alcohol, causing

serious illnesses or mental problems, without forgetting distancing in society. We can use

a smartphone, but we must control it, and not the opposite.

Addictive Smartphone Behavior in Young Adults

Currently, we have the feeling that the smartphone is something very important in our life, and

some people cannot live without a smartphone, and this only proves that slowly we are creating an

addiction for them. Some people believe that only drugs or alcohol create addiction in people, but this is

not correct because a simple device can create a big addiction, and hurt a person who suffers it.

According to Pera (2020) this article discusses about “previous research findings on the

psychology of addictive smartphone behavior in terms of problematic use, social anxiety, and

depressive stress by focusing on the relationship among mobile social media usage, smartphone

addiction risk, mental health issues, and individual well-being” (Pera, 2020, page 1). It is a big problem

that we are currently facing because of the use of new technologies. The author explains that “self-

command, apprehension, depression, and dysfunctional impulsivities are the most significant predictors

of problematic smartphone use. An immoderate utilization of smartphones leads to symptomatology

reminiscent of psychological disorders generated by substance addiction” (Pera, 2020, page 2).  It is not

a new issue for discussion but is important to understand how health in young adults is affected

because of the addictive smartphone behavior and poor psychological health.

Additionally, we can identify us with the explanation about how our physical health can

have serious consequences such as tense spinal position because nowadays as students we spend

time with smartphones or computers. According to Pera (2020, page 3) “Problematic smartphone use

(PSU) can bring about mobility issues in the wrists, fingers, and neck, in addition to intrusion into sleep

habits”. We acquire a bad posture when using the cellphone or the computer, and this causes that our

back and neck suffer a few malformations according to the time that we spend on these devices, but not

only our back or neck suffers damage; our mind is one of the main affected because when we abuse of

the use of these devices, in some cases, we do not sleep very well and this can cause tiredness and
fatigue to our mind, through sleeping, the body rests and recovers the energy lost during the day, to be

able to face a new day.

The author recommends that we must sleep without smartphones, and thus improve our

sleep quality because if we go to bed with the smartphone, we will begin to use it and the sleep quality

will be very bad. In addition, the author describes that smartphone are equipped to boost people's

persistent utilization of social media. Furthermore, smartphones may be instrumental in sharing any

instinctive reflection or experience with users’ social networks. Likewise, in agreement to Pera (2020,

page 4).

“Young adults who spend time with their smartphones need to know that smartphones are

equipped to boost social media for intentions of assertiveness, interpersonal relationships,

and social attention, thus generating higher degrees of stress and dependency associated

with such devices. Also, the incapacity to regulate addiction, escape, anxiety, and

productivity loss all constitute a variety of smartphone users’ behavioral effects from

Problematic smartphone use (PSU). The adoption of smartphones to interact with friends

causes emotional states of deception, remorse, and feeling stressed out to respond

promptly to their smartphone communications. Smartphones enable the adjustability and

non-confinement to collect information, have fun, and interact, with few impediments”

(Pera, 2020, page 4). Behind a smartphone, people can create a double life, and they can

only live with a smartphone, without it they feel empty, they just enjoy being with the device

in their hands. not knowing that life outside the phone is better than the one they created.

Taking everything into consideration, we agree with the article and the author's

thinking, we need to learn that the abuse of something is very bad. The abuse of

smartphones is almost like the abuse of drugs or alcohol, causing serious illnesses or

mental problems, without forgetting distancing in society. We can use a smartphone, but
we must control it, and not the opposite, people must begin to live free of technology or use

it with intelligence, and thus do not create an addiction that could end our life.
