IDdo Read: A Year-Round Reading Activity

Amidst the health crisis brought by the COVID- 19, a school needs to
challenge itself to prosper the love for reading in every student. In accordance to
DepEd – Davao de Oro IDdo Read: A Year-Round Reading Intervention Program,
Alimadmad Integrated School conducted the differentiated reading intervention and
activities to aid students’ reading skills especially on adapting the new normal
educational platform through the support of our reading teachers, parents, and other
stakeholders.

Alimadmad Integrated School – Junior High School teachers accepted the

challenge and took risks to empower reading among our learners most especially to
our identified frustration readers. As of June 2021, there were 12 students who were
identified having problems on reading simple words, comprehending a text, and
writing simple sentences which I considered it as a threat in learning process. As the
JHS reading coordinator, I cannot just let days pass ignoring the problem as if it is
not rotting the system. As part of the resolution, we, teachers who shared the same
passion, adapted the proposed reading program of DepEd Davao de Oro – The IDdo
Read. There, we followed the given matrix and used the distributed reading material.
After the year-round reading intervention, the number of students listed under
frustration readers downgraded from 12 to 7 learners. There were still 5 out of 12
learners who are tagged to the same reading level due to disengagement to the
program.

We believe the more students engaged to face to face reading activities, the
higher the chance they seek help. Oppositely, the more they disengaged, the higher
the risk of still becoming slow readers. Nevertheless, for that reason, the school will
still provide reading programs and do its best to help them grow in their reading
capabilities.
