Checklist: Intradermal Injection Technique

BASIC PROTOCOL
1 Greets the patient.
2 Introduces self
3 Identifies the patient.
4 Explains the procedure.
5 Obtains consent.
6 Sanitizes hands and/or wears gloves.
7 Ensures equipment and medications are prepared
TECHNIQUE
8 Exposes the area for the injection.
9 Has the patient relax and prepares the patient in the correct position
10 Inspects for redness, scars etc.
11 Disinfects skin with alcohol swab in a circular manner, from center outward, only once.
Allows alcohol to dry before injecting.
12 Removes the needle cap with the non-dominant hand, pulling it straight off.
13 Using non-dominant hand, spread the skin taut over the injection site.
14 Hold the syringe in the dominant hand between the thumb and forefinger, with the
bevel of the needle up.
15 Holds syringe at a 5-15 degree angle, placing the needle almost flat against the
patient’s skin, bevel side up
16 Inserts needle into the skin about 3-5 mm with the entire bevel under the skin.
17 Once syringe is in place, slowly inject the solution while watching for a small weal or
bleb to appear.
18 Withdraws the needle quickly at the same angle it was inserted.
19 Using sterile gauze, gently pats injection site if there is any blood (doesn’t massage)
20 Doesn’t recap the needle. Disposes of the complete syringe in the sharps container
21 Disposes of supplies; remove gloves and performs hand hygiene.
22 Checks the patient for any reaction; gives additional reassurance, if necessary.
23 Thanks the patient.
