WHAT ARE WE GOING TO LEARN?
• ORIGIN AND TYPES

• PRODUCTION AND STORAGE

• AGGREGATE CLASSIFICATION AND GRADATION

• AGGREGATE MINERALOGY AND IMPORTANCE

• AGGREGATE SHAPE AND TEXTURE

• AGGREGATE PROPERTIES

2
Specific Gravity of Aggregates
▪ SG is defined as:
weight of a unit volume of material
weight of an equal volume of water at 23℃

▪ Alternatively, it is
weight of a unit volume of material
Buoyant 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 of equal volume of water
In order to find B, we immerse the sample in water, the weight we see
is the net force acting on the body inside water, i.e. W-B
Therefore, B=(W-weight in water) This will change
depending on the
𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐢𝐫
𝐒𝐆 = volume we wish to
𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐢𝐫 − 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 displace!!

3
Specific Gravity of Aggregates
• Types (typical)
• Apparent
• Bulk
• Effective
• ASG > ESG > BSG
• Property of Aggregates: Doesnot depend on binder
content or any other mix parameter
• ASG and BSG can be measured but ESG cannot be
measured
• If the bitumen absorption of aggregates is 0, bulk and
effective specific gravity will be same
• If the water absorption of aggregate is 0, all the
specific gravities will be same

4
Specific Gravity of Aggregates
• Coarse aggregates
• 5 kg oven dried sample retained on 4.75 mm sieve is taken
• Sample immersed in water for 24 hrs
• Sample is removed and surface-dried (aggregate looks damped)
• Weight of the sample is taken (B)
• Sample placed in wire basket, immersed in water and submerged weight is
taken (C)
• Aggregates dried in oven and weight is recorded (A)

Specific Gravity of Aggregates
• Fine aggregates
• A flask pycnometer is used, filled with water and weight is recorded (B)
• 1 kg sample oven dried and immersed in water for 24 hrs
• Alternatively, spray 6% (by weight) water
• Sample spread on clean flat surface and exposed to gentle warm air to get SSD
surface (lightly compacted materials in a cone first slumps when the cone is
removed)
• 500 g sample placed in the flask and weight is recorded.
Actual weight of soil is recorded (D)
• Flask filled with water (with sample) and weight recorded
(C)
• Material is oven dried and weight is taken (A)
• 𝐴𝑆𝐺 = 𝐴/(𝐴 + 𝐵 − 𝐶); 𝐵𝑆𝐺 = 𝐴/(𝐷 + 𝐵 − 𝐶)
𝐷−𝐴
• 𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝐴𝑏𝑠𝑜𝑟𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, % = 𝐴 × 100
