I. EVALUATION OF THE COURSE

 Technical Content:

DAY 1 (June 12, 2018- Tuesday)

1. Introduction to Research Proposal Writing - Basic guidelines in

research/project proposals preparation was discussed by aProf. Garry Jay S.
Montemayor. The participants go through the process of proposal writing
from identification of topic to planning for evaluation of outcome.

2. Searching for Literature - conventional and automated methods of

literature searching were taught by aProf. Montemayor. It develops the skill
of the participants in the efficient use of libraries and online search engines.

3. Ethics in Doing Research - Dr. Gil S. Jacinto

tackled the general ethics of doing research/project proposal, issues on
intellectual property and intellectual dishonesty.

4. Writing the Review of Related Literatures - This topic was thoroughly

discussed by aProf. Avril Adrianne DG. Madrid of Department of Science
Communication, College of Development Communication, UPLB. Review of
Related Literature is the first step in proposing research/project proposal. It
will help the researcher how to find conceptual gaps that will become the
basis for finding appropriate topic and justifying it. Further, tips on how to
manage literatures was also discussed by aProf. Montemayor during the
workshop. The participants were then task to draft their RRL of the chosen
topic which are presented on the next day.

1. Writing the Rationale, Research, Problem, Objectives, Significance and

Scope was discussed by aProf. Elaine D. Llarena. In this session the
participants was given an overview on how to write the rationale, fine tune

scope and limitation. Given that, the participants has identified their topic
for research; rationale, research problem, objectives, significance and scope
of the study were task to be written and presented to the class.

DAY 3 (June 14, 2018- Thursday)

1. Designing Frameworks - aProf. Hermilea Marie C. Castillo

facilitated the topic on designing frameworks. Frameworks are important
because it forms the skeleton of the research/project proposal. It will give an

the framework and how framework is related to other parts of the proposal.

2. Planning the Budget and Timeline and Managing Projects -

This topic was lectured by aProf. Aldo Gavril T. Lim. It gives the participants
an overview of basic principle in project management in which it is very
important part in planning and executing research/project proposal.

3. Evaluating Project Outcomes - In this session, it was emphasized

that evaluation should always be included as early as in the project proposal
stage so that outcomes can be assessed systematically later on.

DAY 4 (June 15, 2018- Friday)

1. Basic Situational Analysis - Dr. Nancy a. Tandang

facilitated the lecture on basic statistics. It is clearly stressed that in the early
stage of writing research/ project proposal the participants should choose
the right sampling techniques, as well as statistical tests to use depending on
the on the research design. A rough introduction of basic statistical tools
application to various research problem/program was discussed which gives
the participant’s insights and hints of to what and where should those
statistical tools be used.

2. Clear and Effective Writing and Editing - Dr. Ma. Theresa H.

Velasco talked on basic and advanced rules of grammar, as well as improving
the accuracy of words used, writing using the correct tone in order to
improve the overall of the written proposal. Moreover, said topic taught the
participants on how to do mechanical and substantive editing.

Fortunately, funding institutions/donors both government and

private like DOST, Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) and
UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme shared insights and highlight on their
respective program areas.

 Impression/Comments:

Writing a research paper does not only involve finding a problem and
immediately addressing them, it involves finding the gaps of the previous
researches to avoid duplication and to improve the way of research among
the scientific community.

Given a limited time in the conduct of training, the participants were

capacitated in writing a research/project proposal effectively, and able to
draft a full blown proposal.

It helps the participants to look for active funding opportunities and

give insight on the criteria, priority agenda and template to be used in order
to meet the standard of said funders.

II. RELEVANCE OF THE LEARNING EVENT TO PARTICIPANTS

WORK/FUNCTION

As technical staff in the Conservation and Development Division it is

very useful because the scope and coverage of our duties is from Ridge to
Reef. And protection and conservation efforts is of great important and
challenge.

III. RECOMMENDATION

It is also recommended that the Department should developed

guidelines for research/project proposal to have a uniform template to be
disseminated to regional/field offices which could be vital for a more effective
and efficient way of managing the environment and natural resources. And
ample time should be allotted in the conduct of said training.
