1. What are the 3 P’s of specification typologies? Define just one.

The 3 P’s of specification typologies are, prescriptive, performance, and proprietary

specifications. Specifically, the prescriptive specification focus on the details for the
types of materials used and the installation of these materials. In addition this
specification differs from the two other specification since it provides a better vision of
what the final product will look like.

2. What is the difference between an open and a close specification?

An open proprietary specification describes a single product or system however it allows

the bidder to suggest an alternate or substitute product. A closed proprietary
specification on the other hand, names only one products accompanied with several
products as options. Here no substitution is allowed.

3. Define the other 2 ps apart from number 1?

Performance specification discusses the operational requirements of a project. This

specification details the function of the final installed product. The third specification on
other hand is used when you only need a single type of product for any kind of
installation. This specification is most least to use by an architect or engineer.

5. What will be the contractor's advantage and the owner’s disadvantage if the Architect
fails to specify correctly?

If the Architect fails to specify correctly, the contractor can add or remove details from
the said specification to benefit him. Such changes can give him more time and money
which he can keep to himself without the client even knowing. In such cases this will be
the disadvantage of the owner. Failure to specify correctly can cause corruption in the
site, and even degrading the owner the quality of work he/she should get from the
Architect.
