PROBLEM

   18 – 0524:      Compute the maximum moment for the given rectangular

                                                reinforced concrete beam as per ACI code requirements.
                                                fc' = 3 kips and fs = 20 kips.

Solution:                    We have n = 9 (for fc' = 3 kips) (See table V at PREP ACI
                        code).
                        Taking moments about the neutral axis (NA), we have
                                                (12) (x) (x/2) = 9(1.8) (21 – x)          (1.8 is As)
                        or                     6x2 = 340.2 – 16.2 x
                        or                     6x2 + 16.2 x – 340.2 = 0
                        This is a quadratic equation in x. Solving for x, we get x = + 6.30 and
                        x = – 9.0
                        Therefore, taking the positive value of x = 6.30"
                        Now, lever arm jd = d – (x/3) = 21 – {(6.3) / 3} = 18.9"
                        Moment:
                                                Mc (Moment on the concrete side)
                                                            = fC(bx / 2) (jd)
                                                ∴   Mc  = 1350 (12 × 6.30/2) (18.9)
                                                            = 964467 lb–in.
                                                Mc (Moment on the steel side)
                                                            = fs ∙ id ∙ As
                                                            = 20,000 × 18.9 × 1.8
                                                            = 680,400 lb–in < Mc
                                                ∴          Ms controls or steel governs.
                                                ∴          M = Ms = {(680400) / (12 × 1000)} = 56.7 kip–ft
