1. TITLE

Assessment of Knowledge Regarding Oral Health Hygiene Among Students of Riphah

International University Malakand Campus Chakdara.

2. INTRODUCTION:

Hygiene (from Greek hygienos) is also a science concerned with the investigations of environmental factors that

affect human health. It studies how the physique responds to them. Obeying the foundations of proper oral hygiene

is of primary importance within the prevention of decay and periodontal diseases. Health education is additionally

vital in dentistry. it's a basic issue of recent prevention programs and is included altogether curricula of medical

courses [1-3]. Oral health is a part of body health that cannot be separated from one another because oral health

will affect the health of the body. Maintenance of oral hygiene is an effort to improve oral health. The role of the

oral cavity is very large for human health and well-being. In general, a person is said to be healthy, not only in a

healthy body but also in the oral cavity and teeth. Therefore, oral health plays a very important role in supporting

the health of one’s body. Oral health issues are an important concern in health development, one of which is the

vulnerability of school age children to dental health problems [4]. Oral hygiene is a significant factor in oral

disease prevention. Given the educational level of university students, the concept of oral health, its importance,

and practice are assumed to be easily understood and applied by them, irrespective of their discipline[5] Oral health

is essential for general health and well-being throughout life. Poor oral health and dental diseases like caries and

periodontal disease can have a significant effect on quality of life as they might affect patients eating, drinking,

swallowing, smiling and communication.[6] Students who specialize in the medical profession must have adequate

knowledge regarding oral health as they come across a large number of patients with various age groups and

diverse backgrounds during their course of the study. Thus, students play an important role in the enhancement of

oral health of the people.[7] Oral hygiene is the process of protecting the oral cavity and keeping it healthy and

clean by various modalities like brushing and flossing in order to prevent tooth decay and gum diseases. Oral

health is just not limited to the teeth being healthy, but means a comprehensive protection of all the structures in

the oral cavity. Oral health knowledge related to periodontal and oral diseases has a major role in the treatment and

prevention of the disease amongst children, adolescents and adults including university students. University

students are a good representative sample for the population since they reflect education, socioeconomic

conditions, acculturation, psychological stress, and culture, which can affect their oral health behavior and status.

Educating adults and university students seems among the means to improve the oral health knowledge and

behavior of the nation in future. In UAE, the oral health system is currently in transition. Our information is limited

regarding the knowledge and attitudes about oral diseases and their prevention. Due to a lack of studies about oral

health attitudes and behavior among pre-university and university students in the UAE, systematic data are needed

for public oral healthcare planning [8] . Improvement in oral health-related knowledge is considered to be an

essential precondition for improving oral health in a community[9] The young children’s play a vital role in

health promotion and preventive information spreading among the family and their society. It is therefore

important that their own oral health knowledge is good. Apart from that, their oral health attitude and practices

conforms to the expectation of the population. These 13- 17 years old youngsters are filled with passionate

quests for intimate relationships and other major commitments involving career and life goals. They encounter

a number of issues of late teenage, i.e., peer pressure, change in food habits that cumulatively affects oral

health. Hence, the purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of oral hygiene

among 13-17 years old childrents who were reported to dental clinic[10].The aim of this study is to highlight the

diseases caused by oral health hygiene and to give knowledge regarding it in the community.
