Does the scenario give you an idea of the conflict that is happening? _________
Yes, there are six basic types of conflict in a story. It includes the following:
Man vs. Man, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. Self, Man vs.
Technology, and Man vs. Supernatural.
This time, you will be provided with an activity that will help you
determine the conflict in a story.
5
_____ 5. A woman tries to reprogram a robot
that wants to destroy humankind. e. Man vs. Supernatural
Did you get the right answers? To deeply understand the different types of
conflicts, here is a thorough discussion that will help you determine the different types
of conflicts in literary selections. The sentences from the activity above will be used as
examples to reinforce learning.
What is a conflict?
6
b. Man vs. Nature – A person is in conflict with nature. This is a
struggle that comes from the setting that the character has to
deal with. It could be surviving in the wilderness after a plane
crash, dealing with illness, an earthquake, starvation, or a
bear.
Example: Mack must fight off a zombie that has been brought
to life through magic.
Resolution
Stories have a plot, and a plot has five main parts: introduction, rising
action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Resolution is sometimes
referred to by the French term denouement, which means "to untie." The
7
resolution of the story occurs when conflicts are ultimately resolved and the
problems are solved in one way or another.
1. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are dead, and their families end
their feud as they realize that their hatred has led to the deaths of their
children.
8
2. When the final book of the Harry Potter series comes to an end,
Voldemort has been defeated through Harry's ultimate sacrifice, and
although there has been much loss of life, Voldemort is ultimately
defeated.
3. At the end of Return of the Jedi, the emperor has been killed by Darth
Vadar, who is Luke's father, and while Darth Vadar has also died, he
and Luke were able to reconcile before his death. Luke returns to the
planet where his friends are waiting, and they celebrate the end of the
empire.
4. In the Biblical story of Noah and the Flood, the flood waters recede after
a period of time, and Noah, his family, and all of the animals are able
to exit the ark. The rainbow becomes a symbol that God will not use a
flood to destroy the Earth again.
Since this module promotes the need to resolve the conflicts in non-violent
ways, I hope that you would handle day-to-day problems as non-violent as
possible.

My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken
(A Summary)
By: Alejandro R. Roces
The story was about the weird chicken which Kiko and his
brother found. They couldn’t tell whether it is a hen or a rooster. They
keep on arguing with each other because Kiko insists that the chicken
is a rooster for they saw it on the field fighting another chicken. But
his brother is not convinced for the chicken has no comb or wattles,
both disagree with one another.
They began to ask their mother and father, even the people in
their village like Tasio and Mr. Cruz. But all of them couldn’t tell
whether it’s a hen or a rooster. And they also thought that it was a
“binabae”.
So instead, they decide to bring it into the cockpit and make it
fight to a rooster. But during the fight, there is a turn of events, things
have gone differently from what they have expected. A lovesick
expression came into the rooster’s eye, instead of fighting, the rooster
began to do some love dance but the peculiar chicken suddenly stubs
its spur into the rooster and the fight is over. The brothers couldn’t
believe what they had seen.
Kiko thinks he convinced his brother that the chicken is a
rooster, but the chicken acts something strange. It began to quiver,
and egg came out and drop into his brother’s hand.
