- general education (for children below 18) - higher education ( for adults over 18) - They do not have a national education system all educational matters are left to the induvidual states. - Each of the 50 states set its own requirements. - Attending school is compulsory up to the age of 16 - It begins with kindergarden (age 4 or 5) - Then they go to grade 1 (first grade) and from it they go to grade 12, this is called K-12 system - K-12 system is free and the schools which are using this system are called public schools - In the USA public schools are ’schools that are open to the public’ - the lowest level of education is called elementary school: grade 1-4 or 1-6 - the next level is middle school: grade 5-8 or 7-9 - the highest level of public school system is the high school: grade 9-12 or 10-12 - most of the children in the USA attend public schools - private schools in the USA are also called sectarian schools-> founded and maintained by religious denomination - For higher education, students have to pay a large amounts of tution fee especially in colleges and universities - Few scholarships are available for special athletes or very poor students. - Over 4000 colleges and universities can be found in the USA - Despite the high tution most of the students out of high schools attend universites and colleges - College -> Bachelor Degree - University-> Master’s Degree and PhD
