“ Phenomenal Woman “
Phenomenal Woman is a lyrical poem that sends out an important message to the world of
convention and stereotype: empowerment comes from being confident in your own female skin,
no matter if you are not seen as cute or fashionable by the masses.
The poem Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou contains the element of feminism as it
presents the ability of a woman to be extraordinary and remarkable among others. It talks about a
woman who is so proud to be woman, who is confidence and has faith in herself.
As a person who has always found solitude and strength in poems, I read "Phenomenal Woman",
a poem written by Maya Angelou. This poem celebrates women's experiences, beauty, strength,
self-confidence, and grace.
The last four lines in the first stanza are like a refrain, they are repeated in the next stanzas as
well. It is done to make it even more clear that Angelou perceives herself as a women that is not
only beautiful but smart and that she is phenomenal. In her poem „Phenomenal woman” Angelou
speaks as a self-confident woman, she wants to show the world what makes her beautiful and she
expresses it in a various way.
The tradition of women writing has been much ignored due to the inferior position women have
held in male-dominated societies. It is still not unheard of to see literature classes or anthologies
in which women are greatly outnumbered by male writers or even entirely absent. The onus of
women's literature, then, is to categorize and create an area of study for a group of people
marginalized by history and to explore through their writing their lives as they were while
occupying such a unique sociopolitical space within their culture.
