Characters Symbolism

Kabesang Tales He embodied the ordinary Filipino who is pleased with

a humble existence. He also represents the locals
and farmers whose lands were taken by the friars,
which helps to explain why Filipinos turned
insurgents.

Placido Penitente Placido Penitente literally means "silent suffering". He

represents Filipinos who are victims of injustice;
remaining silent while trying to endure everything
since Filipinos are known for being strong and
independent, and they tend to keep their chin up
while suffering in silence.

Padre Camora He represents old men who lust after young ladies, as
well as women who have been abused or who have
been subjected to sexual harassment.

Hermana Penchang Hermana Penchang represents religious individuals

who also have malicious intents. Being godly does
not necessarily imply that a person is compassionate
or virtuous. Not all religious people are kind-hearted.

Juli Juli, like Maria Clara, represents the purity and

innocence of the lower-class women during Rizal’s
time. She would rather make a sacrifice than abandon
her values.
