Trenchless technology

has been utilized for pipeline rehabilitation for many years. Advantages of

trenchless technology include reduced surface disruptions, lower reinstallation costs, and shorter
construction times

INTRODUCTION

→Trenchless technologies is the science of installing, repairing and renewing underground

pipes, ducts and cables using techniques which minimize or eliminate the need foe open cut
excavation.

→It is basically making a tunnel below the surface and installing new service lines like
water , sewer, gas , electrical or telecommunication cables etc and to replace / repair old and
damaged pipe lines without any disruption to the public.

→It can reduce environmental damage , social costs and produe an alternative method to
open trench method of installation.

Advantages

Some of the major benefits of trenchless technology include: Environmentally Friendly –

Using specialized equipment underground infrastructure is installed, repaired or replaced
with minimal ecological disturbance. Infrastructure can be installed under buildings, under
forests, under wetlands and bodies of water.
Disadvantages

→Costly for small Lengths

→Highly skilled personal is required.

→Dewatering of the tunnel path is usually required.

→Not Feasible for nature of soil changes drastically.

→Hard rock/Bed rock or very big boulders should not be present in the path line.

Methods

A. For New Pipe /Duct

1. Micro Tunnelling
2. Horizontal Directional Drilling
B. For Repairing/Replacing of Old Pipe/Duct
1. CIPP (Cured in Place Pipe)
2. Pipe Brusting
