Games and activities Singing the Jolly Songs and doing the actions is fun way of helping your child learn the letter sounds in English. Using games and activities will further help them to recognise these letter sounds in words. This is important, as it will help them with both their reading and writing. ‘These games and activities can be played at any time and are perfect for car trips, as no pen or paper is needed. Q = [spy Look around and choose an object you can see, such as a tree. Q ‘Then say, I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with it. Your } child has to try and guess what it is by looking around for things that begin with a t/ sound. When they get it right, itis their turn. Do use the digraphs too, such as /ch/ and sh’. Once your child can hear the sounds easily, you can vary the game with 7 spy, with my little eye, something ending with IV. Sound race You and your child choose a letter sound each {itis better not to choose /a/, /!, il, /o/, Aw, /x/, Jy/ or /2!"). You then have to spot as many things beginning with your letter sound as you can, For example, if, you choose the /c/ sound, you might sce a cat, car, cow, cloud, comer or, even, a kite. Whoever sees the most things beginning with their chosen letter sound is the winner, What sound can you hear? Ask your child if they ‘can hear a specific sound in a word, for example: Js there a Jv! sound in teddy? Is there ai sound in car? Is there a (a) sound in road? Is there an ee! sound in green? Is there a ‘Av! sound in lorry? As in the examples given, vary the question so that sometimes the letter sound és ina word and in others it is not. Where is your mouth? Sound out a part of the body, asking, for example, Where is your m-ow-th? Your child has to try and hear the word, call it out and touch that part of their body, Continue with different words, such as -e-g, ar-m, f-o0-t, b-a-ck, n-e-ck, h-a-n-d, n-ce (knee) and h-e-d (head). Putting the emphasis on the first letter sound, and saying the sounds quickly, will help your child hear the word. ‘As well as parts of the body, you could use farm animals, such as ¢-ow, sh-ce-p and p-i-g. Your child can then answer by making the sound of the animal. Other possible categories are food, transport, pets, colours and sport. fo Add a sound Tell your child a word, for example lip. Then Ss ask them to add a /s/ sound to the beginning of the word, so s+ lip makes slip. Other words are: ctlp ctlog gthd s*lid ptram — ¢+rib dtmg d+rip = stmug s+map = t+ wig t +win f+act stkip s+top htand = b+ lend c+ lamp ctrest c+rust ttramp = s+trip ss twell s+ tick struck ftrock b+lock s+wing bring p + ink ptlane dtrake btrain s+mail = m+eat_ b+ leak stteam ptride stpine stmile ptrice b+end btand oo htam ctloud broil ~=—sh¥car =e +up Once you become familiar with this game, and your child can form the new words more easily, ‘you could start with the longer word and deduct the frst letter sound instead. So you would start with slip and ask your child to take away the /s/ sound at the beginning of the word to make lip. Counting sounds Look around you. or at a picture, and point out something you can see, such as a sheep. Ask your child how many sounds they can hear in the word sheep. Sound it out, holding up a finger for each sound as you say it~ sh-ee-p (3 sounds), Continue | to play, using words with 3 or 4 sounds, for example | shee / sky, gate, cloud, lorry and plane. Try not to choose P long words that are difficult to sound out. Eventually eee your child will be able to sound out the word and count the sounds by themselves. The sounds that letters make have been put in slanted brackets (//) to distinguish them from their alphabet names, so /a/ is the sound at the beginning of ant and not Aas in ABC, Index of songs @. as inant, 1 i as in pain, 10 QP asin art, 20 b asin bar, 10 C as in casianets, 4 CH asin choo, 16 as in drum,7 @ asinege, 5 €@ as ineeyore, 12 F asin mixer, 20 f as in fish, 9 Q asin gurgle, 7 h asin hop, 5 i as in ink, 2 ie asinpie, 12 J sin jam, 11 R win Kite, 4 U asin lollipop, 9 MM. as in meal, 6 TV as in noise, 3 TJ as insirong, 14 J O asin on, 8 OG. asin goat, 11 Ob asin oit, 19 0 asin look; OO asin moon, 15 OF asin ceyore, 12 OU. as in ouch, 18 if P Pp as in puff, 3 QU. asin quack, 18 i. rues Qa S asin snake, 1 Shi asin tush, 17 g f E asin tennis, 2 th asin sis; CHL as in shumd, 17 3 U. asinup, 8 UE asin barbecue, 19 V asin van, 14 vowels stor and tong, 21) W asin wind, 13 X asinxray, 16 y as in yogurt, 15 Z asin buzz, 13 Jolly Songs uses music and actions to help your child learn the letter sounds in English — the first step towards reading and writing.
