Course Objectives:

1. Introduction of different types of renewable energy sources and energy storage


2. Study of solar Photovoltaic and solar thermal system as renewable energy sources
3. Outline the wind energy system for energy generation
4. Understand the concept of Bio-gas and ocean based energy generation system
5. Explore the use of hydrogen gas for energy generation
6. Expose the various controllers used in control of electrical drives

UNIT –1 9 Hours
Solar Energy System
Solar radiation –-Measurements of solar radiation and sunshine – differentiation of solar
photovoltaic and solar thermal systems- Solar thermal collectors – Flat plate and concentrating
collectors – Fundamentals of photo voltaic conversion – Solar cells- equivalent circuit – model
of PV cell - I-V characteristics- spectral irradiance on horizontal and inclined surfaces -PV cells
in series and parallel- -PV panel name plate parameters-effect of temperature – losses in PV
system –current trend in the growth of global solar photovoltaic and solar thermal installations

UNIT – 2 9 Hours
Wind Energy System
Nature of the wind – power in the wind – factors influencing wind – wind data and energy
estimation -wind speed monitoring - wind resource assessment - Betz limit - site selection - wind
energy conversion devices - classification, characteristics, applications – offshore wind energy –
Hybrid systems - safety and environmental aspects – local and global wind energy potential and
installation as on date.

UNIT – 3 9 Hours
Bio-Gas, Tidal Energy and OTEC Based Power Generation
Biomass – Biogas, source, composition – biomass conversion process –direct combustion,
thermo chemical process biomass gasifier, pyrolysis and liquefaction - biogas plant, digesters,
Bio-diesel production –urban waste to energy – overview of global bio-mass energy policy
Tidal energy – Wave energy – Technology options – Open and closed OTEC cycles. Geothermal
energy sources, current scenario of global and local tidal and OTEC.based power generation

UNIT – 4 9 Hours
Hydrogen as a Fuel and MHD Power Generation
Hydrogen, generation, storage, transport and utilization and transport. Fuel cell technology –
Types, power
generation and economics. MHD power generation – Principle, classification, design problems
and development

UNIT – 5 9 Hours
Energy Storage System for Renewable Power Generation
Thermal storage system – Electrical storage systems – Electrochemical storage – hydro-storage –
newer storage technologies –flywheel energy storage

Course Outcomes:

CO1: appreciate the importance of renewable energy sources over conventional sources.
CO2: find the utility for solar photovoltaic and solar thermal system
CO3: Select the wind power generation in place of conventional power generation
CO4: compare Tidal, Bio mass, Geothermal resources and power generation
CO5: appraise the hydrogen gas based power generation
CO6: disseminate various energy storage systems used in renewable energy generation

Scheme of Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE):-


CIE consists of three tests each for a maximum of 45 marks. The performance of two best out of
three tests is considered and is scaled for a maximum of 20 marks, 5 marks will be given based
on class attendance and 5 marks will be given based on MCQ. Total internal marks will be 30
marks.

Scheme of Semester End Examination (SEE):-

The question paper consists of one question from unit 1 and one question from unit 2 ,Unit 3, 4
and 5 will be given with two questions of internal choice each for a maximum of 14 marks with
two to three sub divisions.The students are required to answer five full questions (1 & 2
Compulsory, 3, 4,5 internal choice).
