Understanding and use of complex sentences is an essential skill for student growth in the areas of oral and
written language. These cards are intended to begin student success with building sentences using picture
support for students who may be non-readers. There are 4 color-coded flashcard sets:

Red: The “who” of the sentence

Blue: A descriptor of the “who”
Green: Action/object of the sentence
Yellow: The “when” of the sentence

Students create different sentences by using one of each color. There is no punctuation on purpose to al-
low students to be flexible in the order of their sentence creation. Also, when beginning, you may choose
to only use the “red” and “green” cards for a simpler sentence.

One additional suggestion is to have a white-board on hand. After students make a sentence, draw the sen-
tence so that the whiteboard picture matches the words.

For example, in the sentence “The clown, with big eyes, eats cupcakes at night.” You can draw each compo-
nent on a whiteboard. I am not an artist, and even my rudimentary pictures are good enough for kids!

Make it a game! Have students take turns picking cards face-down. The first to complete a sentence by
finding each sentence part, and putting it in an order that makes sense, wins!
