Reporting the news
1. The Hudson River crash
Captain Sullenberg took the decision to land the plane on the Hudson River.
The event occurred in a densely populated area during the day, so there were many
eyewitnesses and the news spread quickly.
US Airways Flight 1549 (AWE1549) (CACTUS 1549) took off on 15 January 2009
from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Charlotte International Airport in Charlotte, North
Carolina; it was then scheduled to go to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in SeaTac.2
The Airbus A320 splashed down in the Hudson River.34 All the passengers were rescued.
Something important that happened in this news is that when the Hudson River accident
happened, whose flight left New York and shortly after suffered this mishap, being the
cause of the accident 2 geese that entered the turbines. This caused the pilot to make an
emergency landing on the river, but thanks to this feat 154 passengers and crew were saved.
Have you heard of another similar accident? Find out and say where, when,
and how it happened. How did the news spread?
I was very little when suddenly you heard the news on television and radio, where
you only felt pain and anguish and helplessness, waking up knowing that a disaster is
happening, but I didn't know the magnitude of the problem until I grew up and on television
there were already films that talked about this terrorist attack, the world changed from that
day on. It was the morning of 11 September 2001 when suddenly four planes were hijacked
by members of the terrorist group al Qaeda to attack buildings emblematic of the might of
the United States. As a result of this horrific accident was to have a total of 2,996 deaths,
9/11 was and is the largest attack on US soil in history and its consequences are still being
felt.
But they can also be felt on a more personal level, in entire generations who
remember exactly where they were on that day when their history merged with history.
This is what happened in those 149 minutes of bewilderment, chaos and terror.
Major channels around the world carried the news like CNN, BBC and something
important was that on 9/11: the chilling call of flight attendant Betty Ong from the first
plane to crash into the Twin Towers.

American Airlines Flight 11 took off on the morning of Tuesday 11 September
2001, one of four planes hijacked by the terrorist group Al Qaeda in the attacks of 11
September 2001. The plane was used by the hijackers to hit the North Tower of the World
Trade Center in New York City. The plane took off from Logan International Airport in
Boston, Massachusetts, and was bound for Los Angeles International Airport in Los
Angeles, California. The plane was hijacked by five Arab men within the first 30 minutes
of the flight, after killing at least three people and entering the cockpit, killing the pilot and
co-pilot. Mohammed Atta, one of the terrorists, who had been trained as an airline pilot for
the purpose, took control of the aircraft,12 and diverted its route without air traffic
controllers noticing the situation until they realized that the crew had stopped answering
their messages and that Atta had mistakenly transmitted several traffic announcements.

From the plane itself, two flight attendants contacted American Airlines and
provided information about the hijackers, the condition of the passengers and the crew.
The plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:45 a.m. All 92
people on board, including the hijackers, were killed on impact. Among the eyewitnesses to
the attack, Jules Naudet captured the sequence from the street with his video camera, which
was later used by news agencies to report the event, which was initially speculated to be an
accident. The force of the impact and the subsequent fire caused by the explosion of the
aircraft's fuel affected the structure of the building to such an extent that it soon collapsed,
killing thousands of people inside who were trying to flee and dozens of members of the
rescue services. During the debris removal work at the World Trade Center site in the
weeks that followed, rescue workers were able to recover and identify the remains of the
victims of flight 11, although many of the body parts could not be identified.

2. Do exercise 4 e on page 97. Look at the pictures and report what people said.

1. Don’t forget to read the label

2. OK, it’s true.
I wrote all the reviews
3. I’ll delete them, Really I will.
4. If I were you, I’d make a formal complaint.
5. I'll pay for lunch, if you like
6. Don't sit down!
7. Why don't we ask someone for directions? ¨
8. No! I know where we are.
They are probably talking about an experience after visiting a shopping place.
In the first picture there are 2 friends at the laundromat and one of them is telling
her that she should first read the labels before putting a garment in the wash. So she says
Don't forget to read the label.
In the second picture there are 2 people talking about a review that one of them has
made, but, the other man disagrees and asks him to retract it, as he has also made a list of
the reviews, but if he doesn't want those reviews to be made public, then he must promise
to delete them, so he tells him
OK, it's true.
I have written all the reviews
I'll delete them, I really will.

In the fourth picture there are 2 women talking about one that one of them should
make a formal complaint, this must have happened while one of them visited some place
apparently sewing clothes and maybe they did not do a good job, so, that is why she is not
very satisfied and decides to make a complaint, because maybe she saw a box for
complaints and suggestions and that is why she is making the decision and she told the
other girl and she told her that she was not satisfied.
If I, were you, I’d make a formal complaint?

2 friends are having dinner in a restaurant and when they ask for the bill to pay one
of them realizes that he has no money in his wallet, and the other friend says
I'll pay for lunch if you want, a bit embarrassed but accepts.

Two friends go to a café, when the first person sat down, but the second person was
about to sit down, when suddenly the friend notices that the chair is wet and desperately
says: "Don't sit down!

There is a couple walking with a map in their hands and suddenly the wife says that
it is time to ask someone to help them with directions, but the husband says that it is not
necessary to ask her to be calm, because he knew where they were.
Why don't we ask someone to give us directions? ¨
No. I know where we are.

3. Shopping

Do you prefer browsing online, or in real shops? Why?

I like to look at things on the internet to keep up with trends and stuff, but the truth
is, I don't like shopping online, I always prefer physical contact, so I can feel, see, and
make sure I'm making a good purchase. For that reason, I like to do real shopping in shops
rather than online shopping.
Have you ever returned something or asked for a refund? Comment on this
situation.
I did have an experience making an online purchase, for that reason, I had to return
some shoes that I bought through a Colombian footwear magazine, and I wrote down my
size, which is 40, but I got 38 and in another colour, the shipment took 15 days to arrive, I
called customer service and they were a bit embarrassed, because they should now cover
the shipping costs with the shoes that are in the correct size and colour.
The truth is that I asked for a refund, but they told me that they do not refund
money, for that reason they could only help me with the exchange.
4. Read the restaurant review (pg. 95). Would you like to eat at this
restaurant? Why/Why not?
Wow... absolutely to be in a place, so it is evident that it is a restaurant worth
attending to have a pleasant experience.
So, I would go maybe to know what it feels like to be in a 5-star place, that merit is
only given to the best, for the attention, service, and excellence in the tasting of the food,
being me, I would have to save a lot, but as you only live once I would like to have that
opportunity with my son and my mum.
5. Report the following:
"I want you to give this document to your manager tonight." He said...
I want to tell you dear manager of this prestigious place, I am first satisfied, because
of the service, it was recommended to me, and I really leave with a pleasant experience.
The atmosphere is very pleasant, warm and the food is exquisite, the 5 stars for your
restaurant are valid every one of them. The chef is a superb exponent of the culinary art.
Your waiters are so friendly and attentive to make your experience rewarding, the live
music is an addition to a wonderful evening and the sound of the sea is so relaxing, I would
repeat this evening with my family.
See you soon
Sincerely, a satisfied customer
