Summary – raw materials for glass formation from a melt

What is a must and what is not

1. Glassformaer – This would make the structure of the glass. This is a must.
2. Flux- to lower the high melting point of the main glassformer. This is not a must for
glass production. It is used to decrease the energy consumption of the process.
3. Property modifiers- can be added in small quantities to alter the properties of a
glass.
4. Fining agents – to remove bubbles. Without it a glass would form by with bubbles.
5. Colorants – Provide color.
