In this Honors assessment, your task is to research important events taking place in another
country. You will analyze your research to determine the type of government the country has and
determine its level of democracy. You will also consider how events in this country may affect
others around the world.

Step One
Find at least three article-length international news stories for ONE foreign country (not the
United States) of your choice. It may help to scan and search the news first before choosing
your country, looking for articles dealing with government or political issues. You might consider
researching a country with known democratization (A TRANSITION OF A GOVT TO A MORE
DEMOCRATIC WAY OF THINKING) taking place. Examples include:

CHOOSE 1 OF THE COUNTRIES BELOW AND FIND 3 RECENT INTERNATIONAL NEWS

STORIES “ARTICLES” ABOUT THE COUNTRY. In other words….1 country….3 articles about
the 1 country you choose!

· Egypt

̇ Ukraine

· Iraq

· Malaysia

· Morocco

Be sure to save each article and its source. You need to include the whole URL, or Internet site
address link, in your work. When you start your search include words like "world" or
"international" news to begin. The sites may have further links to specific regions or countries for
articles, videos, and more.

Step Two
Read the 3 articles about the 1 country you choose (all 3 articles might be about Egypt). Compose 1
well-written paragraph summary of the ideas, events, or information for each article. In total you will
write 1 paragraph about each article, totaling 3 paragraphs. Your paragraphs must be a
minimum of 4 sentences.
Step Three- AFTER YOU INCLUDE A 1 PARAGRAPH
SUMMARY OF EACH OF THE 3 ARTICLES, YOU WILL
INCLUDE 1 ADDITIONAL PARAGRAPH…
Analyze the information in the 3 articles. Answer the following questions based on the
information you gathered. Your answers must be 4 sentences each. Be sure to answer ALL
parts of each question.

· What do the current events in this country tell you about the nature of its government? What
type of government does it have?

Ukraine is fighting back against Russian forces that are invading them unlawfully. This shows me
the Ukraine government is trying its best to fight off one of the world's superpowers even though
they are nowhere near Russia's military power.

· Is the country undergoing democratization? How do you know? What indicators are you using
to make your judgment? Why are they important?

Yes, Ukraine is going through democratization but it's still filled with many flaws like corruption.
In an article in Newsweek called Is Ukraine a Democracy? Separating Fact From Fiction they
state the 11 Political parties that are linked to Russia that fill Ukraine's “democracy” with
corruption.

· How might the events in this country affect other countries, including the United States?

Well with America being the land of the free and the leader of democracygb many of its citizens
want Americans to support this little country and help the join NATO making them a stronger
player in the world.
