Preparation
Download and print the activity The Mathematics of Mining for each student, or arrange for students to access it online. Download the Maths in Mining PowerPoint and use this as the basis for preparing a presentation on the ways in which mathematics is used in mining. (http://tinyurl.com/27f2cqs). Direct students to the page Measurement links to save them from typing in long URLs throughout the unit.
Lesson sequence
1. 2. 3. 4. Display the first page of the Maths in Mining PowerPoint as students enter the room. Ask them to think silently for a moment of ways in which mathematics might be used in mining. After they have had a minute to consider, have them share their thoughts with a neighbour. Call on each pair to share their ideas with the class. This is an important activity, not only for them to identify and structure their prior knowledge of the topic, but also to enable the teacher to note students knowledge and preconceptions in order to develop the unit so as to extend their abilities. Distribute the activity sheets The Mathematics of Mining. Direct students to fill it in from infor mation that you are about to present. Use the Maths in Mining PowerPoint as the basis for a presentation on the ways in which mathematics is used in mining. (http://tinyurl.com/27f2cqs). Discuss students answers to The Mathematics of Mining sheet, and have them add to the sheet any further ideas that arose during the discussions at the beginning of the lesson.

Preparation
Download and print the activity The Power of Mathematics for each student, or arrange for them to access it online. Arrange computer internet access for the lesson. Bring into class a 100W light bulb and a low wattage energy efficient light bulb (around 10W if possible).
Lesson sequence
1. Write The Power of Mathematics and draw a light bulb on the whiteboard/blackboard/PowerPoint before students enter the room. This will get them starting to think about t he topic the moment they enter. Show them the 100W light bulb and ask them to write down how much coal (in kilograms) they think would be burnt in a power station to illuminate this bulb for one hour. Conduct a class discussion to consider their answers. Repeat this question for the 10W energy efficient light bulb. Discuss again. Distribute activity sheets The Power of Mathematics and have students write answers to the questions in their notebooks. They will need internet access for this activity. Conduct a class discussion to mark the answers that they have written and compare and contrast their answers to steps 2 and 4 above to their findings in questions 12 and 13 of the activity.

Preparation
Arrange computer internet access for the latter part of the lesson. Print the sheets Measuring up mining assessment for each student. Determine the format and conditions for this activity, according to the needs and abilities of your class. The Mathematics Learning Area Guidelines suggest:
Length and degree of complexity increase as students progress through a course of study (2-5 minutes). It is recommended that this task be completed in groups of two, with a 2 -4 minute presentation, prepared in class time and in student s own time.

Individual and/or in groups Preparation in class time and/or in the student s own time Typically in written form, or a combination of written, oral and multimedia forms

It is not recommended that a minimum word count be imposed. It is not recommended that students be assigned topics or mathematical fields from the lists on the criteria sheet. It is not necessary for all topics or fields to be covered by the groups. Particular topics and fields have been emphasised more than others throughout this unit, and it is natural for students to gravitate toward these. The most challenging element of this task is the formulation of a suitable problem. It is recommended that you guide students closely in this process, and that you have examples of suitable problems on hand that you could provide for weaker students to choose from.
Lesson sequence
1. 2. Distribute the sheets Measuring up mining assessment and discuss the task. Ensure that students make a written record of the format and conditions that you have chosen for the activity (see Preparation above). Students begin the process of researching their presentation and choosing their problem.
3.
Extension
A revision worksheet could be compiled by collating all of the problems posed by the students in their presentations. Students could then complete this as a homework assignment and each question could be marked by the students who posed it.
