WIND
Before you Read

The wind blows (moves)

strongly and causes a lot of
destruction (damage).
How can we make friends with
it?
WIND

Wind, come softly (quietly).

Don’t break the shutters (doors) of the
windows.
Don’t scatter (spread) the papers.
Don’t throw (फकना) down the books on
the shelf (cupboard).
There, look what you did — you threw them all
down.
WIND

You tore (cracked) the pages of

the books.
You brought (ले आया) rain again.
You’re very clever (smart) at
poking (punching) fun
at weaklings (weakness).
WIND
Frail (immoral) crumbling (breaking)
houses,
crumbling doors, crumbling rafters
(roofs),
crumbling wood, crumbling bodies,
crumbling lives,
crumbling hearts —
WIND

the wind god winnows (stir, clean) and

crushes (beats) them all.
He won’t do what you tell him.
So, come, let’s build strong homes,
Let’s joint (collective) the doors firmly
(confidently).
Practise (अ यास) to firm the body.
WIND

Make the heart steadfast (strong and fast).

Do this, and the wind will be friends with us.
The wind blows (moves, flows) out weak
fires.
He makes strong fires roar (shout) and
flourish (grow).
His friendship is good.
We praise (appreciate) him every day.
WIND
Summary of the Poem
 The poet is talking to the wind. He is saying that it should come softly just like
a small child does.
 Later, we come to know that the wind is full of energy, violence (anger) just
like a youth (जवानी). It breaks everything, all the books which are kept on the
shelf fall down due to strong wind.
 The word ‘Crumbling’ is said so many times. The poet is saying that whenever
a weak person faces any difficulty or challenge in life he breaks down and falls.
WIND

 A comparison (तुलना) is made between wheat (गेहूँ) and people.

Just like we winnow (छनना) the wheat to separate the grain from
chaff (भूसा), the wind god separates the strong people from the weak
people.
 The poet wants us to make friends with the wind i.e the problems
will come, so we should be prepared and be strong and then he says
that we should also make our bodies strong and hearts firm to face
these challenges.
