LETTER
Dear Parents,

KC High has designed its curriculum and assessments with the Cambridge learner attributes in mind. The five
attributes are our way of recognising that students need to develop attitudes and life skills throughout their
education, as well as academic skills, in order to be successful at university and in employment.

Through our IGCSE programme, we help students who are:

Confident in working with information and ideas – their own and those of others
Our learners are confident, secure in their knowledge, unwilling to take things for granted and ready to take
intellectual risks. They are keen to explore and evaluate ideas and arguments in a structured, critical and
analytical way. They are able to communicate and defend views and opinions as well as respect those of others.

Responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others

Our learners take ownership of their learning, set targets and insist on intellectual integrity. They are
collaborative and supportive. They understand that their actions have impacts on others and on the environment.
They appreciate the importance of culture, context and community.

Reflective as learners, developing their ability to learn

KC High students understand themselves as learners. They are concerned with the processes as well as the
products of their learning and develop the awareness and strategies to be lifelong learners.

Innovative and equipped for new and future challenges

Our learners welcome new challenges and meet them resourcefully, creatively and imaginatively. They are
capable of applying their knowledge and understanding to solve new and unfamiliar problems. They can adapt
flexibly to new situations requiring new ways of thinking.

Engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference

Our learners are alive with curiosity, embody a spirit of enquiry and want to dig more deeply. They are keen to
learn new skills and are receptive to new ideas. They work well independently but also with others. They are
equipped to participate constructively in society and the economy – locally, nationally and globally.

REFLECTIONS

PROMIT SENGUPTA
Over the course of this year, I started off with many challenges in terms of the new subjects I had chosen,
such as Economics and Business Studies, as I had never studied them before. For a couple of months till the
beginning of Semester 2, I struggled with topics, but recently, I have begun to get the hang of the subjects
and the topics taught by our teachers. Just like this, I had encountered many other challenges, like how to
make better presentations or write better reports. As time passed, I started to use different websites on the
internet to improve my quality of work. Furthermore, learning about new tools like this on the internet by
myself has indirectly improved my self-learning skills. Knowing that next year is going to be much tougher
than Grade 9, I intend to improve my grades, even more, focusing on subjects like Business Studies,
Economics, Math and the Sciences. That is because sometimes, I slack off by being reluctant about studying
for a test because I think I am confident about it. This attitude of mine has cost me a lot of marks in my
academics, and I would like to not repeat that again next year. I hope that trying to let go of this attitude
would make a better learner. Another thing I would really like to do is try to interact more with my
classmates and try to make new friends.

Promit conducts himself with maturity and although prefers working independently during Blended
Learning, he took the initiative to collaborate during his brief stint attending in-person school. He is
passionate about football. Promit is encouraged to be more forthcoming when opportunities that interest him
are presented, and thus strive to reach his full potential.

Research Writing

In order to prepare learners to write extended essays, which is a mandatory component in the IB DP
programme, research writing was introduced as a part of the curriculum this year. Under this programme,
they learnt about selecting sources, reviewing literature, referencing with MLA 8, writing summaries and
annotated bibliographies; and overall organizational and self-management skills

Promit’s annotated bibliography was in Language Arts on the topic “How did the language used by Biden
and Trump in their presidential debates influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the United
States?” He was meticulous in his choice of sources and they were credible and relevant. His summary and
evaluation of the sources were also very comprehensive. His choice of examples from the sources showed
that he had gone through them thoroughly. He is encouraged to continue working on his research skills and
use them effectively in his academic research.

ASSESSMENT EXPLANATION
HOW THE STUDENT AND THE WORK ARE ASSESSED

Cambridge IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course and can include written, oral, coursework and
practical assessment. This broadens opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning, particularly when their
first language is not English. In many subjects there is a choice between core and extended curricula, making
Cambridge IGCSE suitable for a wide range of abilities.

Grades are benchmarked using eight internationally recognised grades, A* to G. Cambridge IGCSE examination
sessions occur thrice a year in March, June and November. Results are issued in May, August and January.

Grade Band Description

A* 85-100% Outstanding: The student demonstrates an outstanding achievement of what is

expected for this year level.

A 75-84% Excellent: The student demonstrates an excellent achievement of what is expected

for this year level.

B 65-74% High: The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year
level.

C 55-64% Satisfactory: The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected

for this year level.

D 45-54% Limited: The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this
year level.
