The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena. It is located in the
northern part of the state of Arizona, in the United States of America. Covering one and quarter
million acres, it stretches 277 miles east to west and extends 1 to 18 miles in width. The depth has
been measured at one mile, which is deeper than any other canyon in the world. It is easy to see why
the Grand Canyon is included as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Tourist travel to the canyon began as early as 1890 and increased rapidly after the hotel was built
on the South Rim seven years later. In 1919, the Grand Canyon Park was established, with its
headquarter on the South Rim of the canyon. Ninety percent of the visitors view the Grand Canyon
from the South Rim, which, unlike the North Rim, is open year round. Visitors can drive around the
canyon to the North Rim by using a road that is 214 miles long. They can also cross the canyon over
a 21-mile trail on a two-day hike. Most visitors drive along the park roads, stopping at scenic viewing
points, and many take walks along the canyon rim or hike along one of the 36 trails. Campers can
ride mules down into the canyon.
The habitat for wildlife at the Grand Canyon is spectacular. The white-tailed Kerab squirrel and
pink Grand Canyon snake are exclusive to this area. Some other animals of interest that roam the
canyon are elk, deer, mountain lions, and bighorn and pronghorn sheep, while the Colorado River is
home to a beaver population. Bird lovers can scan the skies for approximately 300 species of birds.
The Grand Canyon is a diverse region of vast proportions with infinite scenes of wild beauty.

Dear Daniel,
If you'd like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up your vocabulary. In
order to do this, you have to practice a lot. I’m afraid there is not a short cut for this. But there are
many effective ways. First of all, you should read a lot. You can read short stories, comics,
newspapers, magazines etc. depending on your English level. As you read, you can try to guess
the meanings of unknown words from the context of the sentence. If you cannot, then look up the
definition in a dictionary. English to English dictionary should be your first choice and keep the
translator as last. Another way of building vocabulary is to watch movies in English which will
also help with pronunciation. Try to be involved with the language as much as you can. Keep a
vocabulary notebook and write down a few words each day. Keep in mind that you have to revise
them regularly. In my opinion, to communicate with people all you need is words. Even if you
just say the words one after another, people most likely will understand what you mean regardless
of the order of the words and grammar.
6
Question 39. Which of the followings is incorrect?
A. We should take notes when we learn new words.
B. We should use a translator for all the unknown words.
C. We should read a lot.
D.We should practice as much as we can.
Question 40. What is the most important thing to communicate with people according to the writer?
A. Grammar B. Vocabulary
C. Order of the words used D. Advanced English course
Questions 41 – 42 refer to the following notice.
Because of the holiday, weekend parking regulations will be in effect throughout the city all
day tomorrow. There will be no charge for parking in metered parking places; however,
downtown public parking garages will be closed. Subways and buses will follow the Sunday

on the green river bridge will be suspended, but the bridge will remain close.

Many people are not aware that plane trips pose several health hazards. This is of particular
concern for business travelers who fly frequently. The more often you travel, the greater the health
risk becomes. One problem with planes is that the air in the cabin is constantly recirculated. This
means that instead of breathing fresh air from the outside, you breathe the same air over and over
again, along with all the other passengers. This exposes you to colds, flu, or any other contagious
disease that another passenger may have brought on board. You can protect yourself by making
sure you get plenty of Vitamin C in the days. before your flight. While on the plane, drink a lot of
water. The dryness of the cabin air enhances your susceptibility to disease. Maintaining a general
state of good health by eating right, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep is also
important.
Long flights pose another sort of health problem. Being forced to sit fora long time in the same
position is bad for your circulation. It's -particularly dangerous for people who are at risk for blood
clots and other circulatory problems. You can lessen the risk by getting up from your seat every
hour-or so and taking a walk down the aisle. Standing up and moving around even for just a few
minutes will improve your circulation and help you feel more comfortable.
Your business obligations may not allow you to fly less frequently or take shorter flights. These
recommendations will help you look out for your health while traveling.
