The importance of warehouse layout in logistics
On March 3, 2021 Sunol, Hector said the layout of a warehouse is extremely important since it has a
direct impact on its efficiency and production. The structure should put procedures in a logical order to
assist streamline operations, increase productivity, and cut costs. A well-executed warehouse layout
design can enhance order fulfilment rates by providing simple access to stored goods, reducing travel
time, and reducing costs.
Furthermore, during the planning process, it is critical to evaluate all of the requirements in light of a
company's needs. This is due to the higher material and labour expenditures involved in changing the
planned layout once the construction of your facility has begun.
Budget Considerations
It is critical to examine all a company’s requirements, review associated finances, and then plan a
warehouse layout properly before beginning the design process. It may come across some layout plans
that are more thorough and pricier than others throughout this process, but it is recommended that a
company choose the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for a warehouse.
Space Available
Getting the most out of the warehouse space can help enhance inventory visibility, cut trip time, and boost
overall operational efficiency. When planning a warehouse layout, make sure to leave plenty of room for
storage and inventory processing while minimizing space for office areas, empty pallets, charging
stations, and other amenities. Furthermore, the way a company allocate space has an impact on shelving
designs, installation capacity, and the placement of goods within a facility.
Flow
For a warehouse to run smoothly, it's critical to consider the continual movement of goods, workers, and
equipment while designing the layout. By deliberately designing a warehouse layout design so that each
process can be completed in a sequential manner, you may minimize inefficient paths and disruptions.
Accessibility
When designing your warehouse layout, make sure that all regions and items in your facility are easily
accessible. The arrangement should be designed to allow staff to easily navigate throughout the facility
while also allowing them to locate and pick items without having to move other products. As a result, the
production will improve, and orders will be fulfilled more quickly.
Equipment
The layout design can be influenced by the employment of various types of equipment in the warehouse,
such as lifting and packaging tools, pallet racks, and conveyors. This can evaluate and develop the most
appropriate layout according to the requirements and increase the efficiency of a business by determining
the equipment required.

Warehouse layout for island dairy
The L-shaped warehouse design sets up the traffic flow in the shape of an L. Loading and reception areas
are positioned on one side of the building and the shipping and picking areas are posted on the adjacent
side. The rest of the space is filled with products with plenty of space for storage.
Products moving into storage and out again at an ad hoc or with cross docking which is a logistical
strategy where products and materials are unloaded from one inbound source and then immediately move
onto outbound transportation

The different types of information systems and machineries that will

use to conduct warehouse operation

WMS software (Warehouse Management System) is essential for third-party logistics (3PL) companies.
Unfortunately, selecting the best option isn't always simple. There are a variety of warehouse
management systems to choose from, as well as numerous solutions within each of these categories. To
make an informed decision, you must first understand the possibilities, why they differ, and which is ideal
for your business. When it comes to 3PL firms, there are three fundamental types of WMS systems.
Standalone warehouse management, supply chain execution modules, and integrated ERP (enterprise
resource planning) systems are all examples. It's worth noting that the functionality and characteristics of
each are basically the same; the only difference is in the packaging and delivery method.

There are numerous advantages to using various types of warehouse management software. It assists
users in lowering operating costs by reducing manpower and wasted space. Businesses may control their
inventories with WMS software. Cycle counts, shipping tracking, and expiration date monitoring, among
other things, become easier. Barcoding, serial numbers, and RFID tagging features boost inventory
visibility and keep inventory organized.

Through inventory tracking capability, WMS assists users in optimizing inventory transportation both
inside and outside. Receiving, put away, slotting, picking, packing, and shipping tasks may all be
optimized with the right software.

WMS provides a tool or module to address every area of warehouse management, each with its own set of
advantages and disadvantages.

System Types
So now let’s dive into the main 3 types of warehouse management systems:

1. Standalone

Only the warehouse management functions of stand-alone systems are purchased. These storage
systems can be integrated with current or future solutions, but they are sold as a specialized

6| P a g e
product with no additional supply chain functions. Although some providers provide a limited
number of fundamental transportation management solutions, the emphasis is on best-of-breed
WMS. Greatest-of-breed is akin to selective breeding in that it only incorporates the best, most
vital aspects of all possible warehouse management system modules. Inventory management and
warehouse operations are usually included in WMS. Expiration date tracking, barcode scanning,
cycle counting, slotting, put away, receiving, picking, packing, and shipping are all features of
standalone WMS. Standalone WMS is the most basic of the warehousing management systems.
It's frequently mentioned as one of the different sorts of inventory management systems because
it may be used in a variety of industries other than warehouse management. As a result, it's an
excellent choice for SMBs and organizations with a limited software budget. It doesn't include
any additional phases in the logistics chain and may not work as well with other types of business
software as some of the warehouse management systems listed below.

2. Supply Chain Modules

You may conceive of WMS systems as a subclass of supply chain management when analyzing
different types of WMS systems (SCM). Supply chain management software covers a wide range
of topics, from vendor relationships to corporate procedures to risk assessment. It emphasizes on
operations like inventory management, material sourcing, and product cycles that can be
automated. Investing in supply chain planning software with warehousing capabilities is required
when choosing this type of warehouse management system. It's a popular path since it allows 3PL
companies to learn about the various advantages of SCM. Combining WMS with other apps is a
great approach to guarantee that different portions of the organization are well-connected. While
standalone solutions just handle warehousing, it provides holistic control of the entire supply
chain. If you choose this path, be sure there are no overlaps with your existing software. If you
currently have fleet management, inventory management, and warehouse management software,
you might be able to combine them all into a single SCM platform. Another strategy to avoid
overlap is to select an SCM that can be readily integrated with other corporate software such as
payroll and ERP software – which takes us to the next WMS choice.

3. Integrated with ERP

ERP is a comprehensive software solution that integrates the features of a number of different
systems. It includes the majority of the fundamental tools that enable 3PL operations to run
efficiently, including supply chain planning, accounting, customer relationship management,

7| P a g e
human resources, and more. ERP is a wonderful choice for companies who want to improve their
software on a wider scale. This is a great move for businesses trying to get a competitive
advantage and boost their ROI. They're specialized systems that provide scalability and reliable
supply chain execution. Warehouse management tools are available in integrated ERP systems,
but it is not a basic ERP function. Keep this in mind when you look for ERP software. Before you
choose a solution, be sure it includes functionality for warehouse management.

This type of warehouse management system also comes at a higher cost — think of it as software
that can do everything. ERP can replace a variety of different software applications and
consolidate your activities into a single interface due to its extensive breadth. ERP may be the
ideal option for you if you're unhappy with existing software solutions you're using or wish to
integrate them into a single system (and payment!). WMS as a supply chain module and as an
ERP integration differ from standalone systems in that they include warehouse management as
part of a larger package. So, the first decision you'll have to make is whether you want to invest in
a dedicated WMS or a hybrid solution. The answer is contingent on your company's size and
aims.

Reason this layout was chosen

First, we focused on designing a practical warehouse layout, we understood that it is a crucial process as it has
a direct impact on the efficiency and productivity of the warehouse.

We knew that a well-executed warehouse layout design will provide easy access to stored goods, minimize
travel time, and improve order fulfillment rates.

This is why we sought the need for a L-shaped warehouse design because it's sets up the traffic flow in the
shape of an “L.” Loading and reception areas are positioned on one side of the building, and the shipping and
picking areas are posted on the adjacent side. With the rest of the space being filled with dairy goods, this will
have plenty of space for storage with this layout it will be easier generate a large volume of dairy
products/goods in a short time. Allowing Cost and unit cost to be very low as well as the high volume of
labour specialization being reduced.

It was also chosen because after analyzing the layout we knew it will meet the important component of our
business overall operations, both in terms of maximizing the effectiveness of the production process and
meeting the needs of employees.

regulator could cause a major loss for their business. Hence why it is important to ensure that all equipments
are used properly and temperature is regularly checked and adjusted.

The L-shaped layout provides larger sorting and storage areas for both shipping and receiving docks as well as
allowing for isolated monitoring of each function.
