Prevention is better than cure. This adage encapsulates the entire concept of disaster

readiness and risk reduction (DRRR). In a world wherein we can rarely predict natural

hazards, disaster readiness and risk reduction is paramount. DRRR is important in everyone’s

lives because once we learn all about the various disciplines of DRRR, we have the ability to

reduce the severity and impact of natural hazards. We can help each other forge a better place

and keep each other safe at the same time. These reasons are why I believe that DRRR is

important for everyone, not just for my loved ones and myself.

There are many factors that should be considered when implementing DRRR in a

society, with the cooperation of the population being the predominant factor. Some societies

strictly execute DRRR in their areas more than the other communities. DRRR is all about

making the right choices through the systematic efforts of everyone in a community or

society. Despite DRRR being an important aspect of human survival, it is still taken lightly

by many locals which is why many places are still tremendously vulnerable to a great amount

of natural hazards. The fate of the success of DRRR programs rest in the hands of the

residents and officials and how serious they are about the matter.

As a senior high school student with knowledge about DRRR, I can actively promote

various DRRR techniques and disciplines starting with my family and gradually educating as

many people as I can. This is a simple but efficacious resolution that can easily be

implemented in the minds of everyone. To be an instrument of a serious topic such as DRRR

is a huge responsibility which can change one’s life. Many people are still clueless about the
benefits and importance of DRRR which is why it is my duty and responsibility as a senior

high school student to enlighten them and just like St. John Bosco, I can serve the last, the

lost, and the least.
