1.Some gestures in Germany and Ukraine are different. For example, in Ukraine, if
we want to show that someone is crazy, we twist our finger to our temples. In
Germany, however, there is another gesture for this. The Germans are waving their
hand in front of their face.
Or, for example, a gesture indicating that you are not averse to drinking. In
Ukraine, this is touching the neck with two fingers. In Germany, it is a fist with a
protruding little finger and thumb. They bring such a fist to their mouth - a gesture
comes out that calls for drinking alcohol.
Another interesting gesture. In Ukraine, people show the number three using their
middle three fingers. In Germany, people use their index and middle fingers for
this.

Once my family and I went on vacation to Tunisia. Like all tourists, I wanted to
buy some kind of souvenir at the souvenir shop in the market. When I chose the
item I liked, the seller asked if the item was damaged? Instead of answering, I
showed such a gesture as - everything is okay - big and forefinger connected in a
ring. The seller in the market was surprised. He later explained that this gesture in
Tunisia means "I will kill you". I was very uncomfortable. I, in turn, explained that
in Ukraine, this gesture means that everything is fine.
If I were in the seller's place, I would be surprised and ask what he had in mind.
Knowing that this is a tourist, I would not be angry or offended in any way. I might
even laugh. But I would definitely ask where the tourist comes from and what it
means to this homeland.

1. Individuals from any two cultures must make the same observations, but their
interpretations can be very contrasting . That's the reason why they attach
dissimilar cultural definitions to what they observe.
