Abstract

This is a text-book for students desiring a practical introduction to the modern science
of ecology. The first three chapters are concerned with the definition, scope, concepts
and human relations of ecology, the principles involved and the different kinds of
analyses employed, the fourth consists of an extended series of exercises in ecology
intended for students in town and country, the fifth is a survey of ecological apparatus
and techniques and the sixth consists of keys to the major groups of land invertebrates,
the orders of insects, the families of Hemiptera, Diptera and Coleoptera and the
superfamilies of Hymenoptera. Various useful tables and suggestions for further reading
are given in appendices.
