Background Deshpande Foundation (India) is proud to launch Navodyami 2011. Through this competition, we aim to encourage the growth of small businesses in the districts of Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada-otherwise known as the Sandbox region. Deshpande Foundation, founded by Gururaj (Desh) and Jaishree Deshpande in 1996 promotes social entrepreneurship by hosting, supporting and guiding dynamic individuals dedicated to generating innovative, scalable ideas, in the Sandbox. The Deshpande Foundation is seeking innovative ideas that can be turned into successful enterprises. Winning ideas will be awarded seed capital and technical assistance. A panel of successful entrepreneurs will screen for the best business ideas in two phases: 1. Phase 1: Screening of Business Ideas Business ideas will be screened for eligibility and participation in Phase 2. 2. Phase 2: Further Screening based on Business Plan The selected participants will receive support from the Deshpande Foundation in creating a formal business plan. Afterwards, these plans will undergo another screening process. Ideas will be awarded seed capital in three categories: Category 1: Less than 1 lakh rupees Category 2: 1 -3 lakh rupees and Category 3:Up to 5 lakh rupees Eligibility Criteria The business should operate in one or more of the five districts of Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada. Should be environment friendly and follow ethical practices. Must have the scope of becoming viable in the foreseeable future.

Please Note Applications cannot be made in groups. Only one person is allowed to submit one application. There will be a per application fee of Rs. 100, Rs. 200 and Rs. 500 for Category 1, Category 2 and Category 3 respectively. It is to be paid via Demand Draft addressed to Deshpande Centre for Social Entrepreneurship along with the application. Applicants will be intimated only if they are selected for the training sessions All mentoring sessions will be held at the Deshpande Center for Social Entrepreneurship (DCSE) of the Deshpande Foundation. The participants will need to bear the transport charges to reach Hubli in addition to the travel, accommodation and food expenses at Hubli itself. The Organizer of the competition, Deshpande Foundation, reserves the right to reject or exclude an idea from the competition if it is found to be disputed, coming from a person ineligible to participate or is against the principles and ethics of the Foundation. - The Organizer reserves all the rights to selection, judgement and award of money as well as to change the rules without notification. -The decision of the Selection Panel will be final and binding with respect to the selection of the winners of the competition. No requests or demands may be made by the participants to the Selection Panel to change their decision. -The Organizer is not legally liable to offer mentorship and technical assistance to the participant. Further information about the mentorship and training sessions will be provided separately to selected individuals prior to commencement. -The Selection Panel will be asked to keep all the submissions confidential. No part of your submission will be revealed except a summary for advertising purposes. -Confidential Information does not include information received from or disclosed by a third party without any breach of obligations of confidentiality, disclosure of information already known publicly or information disclosed following a Court Order. -The applicant agrees to exempt the Organizer of any legal liability that may arise from participation in the competition.
