Consider the 350 kg roller coaster in the figure below.

The height at points A, B, and C are 30 m,

10 m, and 55 m, respectively. a. Find the velocities at points B and C if the velocity of roller
coaster at point A is 60 m/s
Angela is an Olympic figure skater. At the end of her performance, she spun. Her weight is 53
kg, and her initial moment of inertia and angular velocity are 3.0 kg m2 and 0.5 rev/s,
respectively. a. Find her angular acceleration as she pulls her arms in to her stomach if her final
moment of inertia is 2.2 kg m7 after 1.1
a.

Initial moment of inertia (Ii) = 3.0 kg-m2

Initial angular velocity (ωi) = 0.5 rev/s = (0.52π) rad/s = π rad/s

Her initial angular momentum is given by (Li) = Iiωi = (3.0π) kg-m2/s

Her final moment of inertia (If) = 2.2 kg-m2

Let her final angular velocity be ωf.

Her final angular momentum is given by: (Lf) = Ifωf = (2.2ωf)

Since no external torque acted on her, according to conservation of angular momentum:

her final angular momentum must be equal to her initial angular momentum.

=> Lf = Li

=> (2.2ωf) = (3.0π)

=> ωf = (15π / 11) rad/s

Time in which this change in angular velocity occured (t) = 1.1 s

Let her angular acceleration during this time be α.

From equation of rotational motion, we get:

ωf = ωi + αt

=> (15π / 11) = π + α1.1

=> α = 1.04 rad/s2

Answer: 1.04 rad/s2

Calculation of her kinetic energy:

Her initial rotational kinetic energy = (1/2)Ii(ωi)2 = (1/2)3.0(π)2 = 14.8 J

Her final rotational kinetic energy = (1/2)If(ωf)2 = (1/2)2.2(15π / 11)2 = 20.2 J

A uniform beam is 5.0 m long and is supported as shown in the figure. At the center of the beam,
a baby mobile is attached. a. If my = 12 g and my = 10 g find the value of m3 in order for this
mobile to sit in equilibrium

b. If the torque exerted by the tension on the cable is 1300 Nm, what must be the mass of the beam?

Taking moments of force about the mid point we have m₁× 2 =m₃× 3

Or m₃ = 2 m₁/3 = 2×12/3 = 24/8 = 8g

Therefore mass m₃ should be 8 g

• Let the mass of beam be M

therefore force acting at the midpoint of beam = (m₁ + m₂ + m₃ + M)g = (12+10+8 +M)×10⁻³ × 9.8 =
(20+M)×10⁻³ × 9.8 N

Taking moment of forces about left end of the beam,we have

={20+M)×10⁻³× 9.8× 2.5 = 1300

or 20+M = 1300/(9.8×2.5×10⁻³) = 53061

or M = 53041 g or 53.041 kg
