 Academic text is an example of a text produced for academic purposes.
This is done by students to meet the standard which the senior high school
or college curriculum may require in order to develop students’ strong
command of the language set in an
academic context.

Factors to consider when doing academic
writing……
 Key Characteristics of Academic Writing
● Formal tone - A formal tone is always used in academic writing.
● Precise Language - In keeping with the formal tone, it’s important to choose precise language that very clearly conveys
the author’s meaning.

● Point-of-view (POV) - Academic writing is usually written in third person POV because its focus is to educate on the
facts rather than to support an opinion or give advice.

● Research focus - Because most academic writing involves reporting research results.
● Organization - Academic writing should be organized logically in a linear, matter-of-fact fashion.
● Source citations - Most academic writing includes at least some secondary research sources.
 What are the different Academic Writing Conventions?
F- FORMAL
refers to how we use a different phraseology or words that we carefully chose to suit a particular idea or concept.

I - IMPERSONAL
this refers to wording and expression that conveys a sense of non – familiarity and objectivity.

S - STRUCTURED
this refers to certain structural elements that set academic writing apart from others.

H - HEDGE
this refers to the use of cautious language in order not to sound condescending or to proud about a certain claim.
