Solution to Problem Set-1

Solution-1:

Solution-2 (a-b):

For the isoprofit line, we choose the line passing through the point (20, 0). Because (20, 0) has
a z-value of 3(20) + 2(0) = 60, this yields the isoprofit line z = 3𝑥𝑥1 + 2𝑥𝑥2 = 60. Examining lines
parallel to this isoprofit line in the direction of increasing z (northeast), we find that the last
“point” in the feasible region to intersect an isoprofit line is the entire line segment AE. This
means that any point on the line segment AE is optimal. We can use any point on AE to
determine the optimal z-value. For example, point A, (40, 0), gives z = 3(40) = 120.
(c) We need to add the following constraints in the above formulation, 𝑥𝑥1 ≥ 30, 𝑥𝑥2 ≥ 20. Now
we have the following graph after adding these constraints:
From graph it is clear that no point satisfies all of the constraints. This means that problem has
an empty feasible region and is an infeasible LP (No Feasible Solution).

Solution-8: (a-b)
Optimal solution is 𝑥𝑥1 = 0; 𝑥𝑥2 = 10, 𝑍𝑍 = 10

(c) We can increase objective function values infinitely, therefore, problem has unbounded
solution.
