Project Method

- Is a teaching method that requires the students to present in concrete form the results of
information gathered about a concept.

Kilpatrick classifies projects into four:


• Construction project. This type of project is for the motive of doing or making something.
Ideas are concretized like making articles for an exhibit, preparing foods for a festival.
• Enjoyment project. Participation in varied activities that bring about satisfaction and
enjoyment is the aim of this type of project. An example of this is planning and
participating in a school presentation.
• Problem project. Mastery of a learning difficulty that comes within the learner himself is
the motive of this project. Such is brought about by the interest and self-direction of
students in improving himself.
• Learning project. This type of project is done through an inner drive to learn something
or acquire a skill. An example of this is learning to play the piano or electric organ.
Advantages
• It is a teaching strategy that emphasizes “learning by doing”.
• Constructing projects develops the students’ manipulative skill.
• The planned design of the project test the student originality in choosing the materials to
be used.
• It can be employed among students who are weak in oral communications the finished
product can serve as evidence of learning achieve.
• The completed project adds to one’s feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction, thus
motivating students to continue constructing new projects in schools and at home.
• It instill the values of initiative, industry and creativity.
• Working on project in groups develop the spirit of cooperation and sharing of ideas.
• In addition to learning a concept, students become productive and enterprising.
