The first scene features a literature professor named Hak-kyu, who is traveling to a small town.

Hak-Kyu left his previous university in Seoul due to a ridiculous misunderstanding.

As soon as he steps off the bus, a young lady named Deokee looks at him as if she has never
seen a man in a suit before. Later, It is shown that Deokee lives with her mother, Kim, who is
unable to speak. She takes care of her mother very well, and performs all the house chores with
perfection. Kim wants Deokee to marry as soon as she finds a decent man, but the latter wants
to live with her mother for the rest of her life.

Meanwhile, Hak-kyu teaches some elderly students how to write a novel in his class.

The next day, Hak-kyu, once more, meets Deokee at an amusement park where she works as a
ticket counter attendant. She inquires as to why he is wearing a suit in the park, to which he
replies that he runs a literature class nearby. Hearing this, Deokee becomes excited as she is a
big fan of literature. Hence, she enrolls herself in the classes and pays attention to Hak-Kyu’s
lecture. Moreover, she also seems to be interested in the professor himse;f.

After the class, all of them, including Hak-kyu, drink together and talk about their lives. Some
elders ask Deokee about her marriage plans, but she feels awkwards and changes the topic.
Later, Hak-kyu and Deokee walk back together, and Hak-kyu stops by a restaurant to drink
alone. Meanwhile, Deokee spies on him from the window, indicating that she has fallen for her
professor.

Late that night, Hak-kyu calls a friend in Seoul named Dong-woo to inquire about the current
situation. Hak-kyu is revealed to be falsely accused of sexual harrassment by one of his
students in the university. Dong-woo claims that he is gathering evidence to prove Hak-kyu's
innocence but he believes that it will take some time. As a result, he asks Hak-kyu to do
something rather than remaining depressed.

The next evening, Hak-kyu and Deokee meet and go for drinks at a restaurant, where they
begin conversing. Hak-kyu shares everything, explaining why he has come to the small town,
and after hearing him out, she comforts him by asking him to wait until the dark clouds pass. He
doesn't think things are that simple, but he thanks her for listening to him and believing in him
when no one else did. Meanwhile, he receives a call from his daughter, who inquires about his
return to Seoul. Hearing this, Deokee is saddened, as she believed that Hak-Kyu was single.

In the next scene, Hak-kyu decides to leave for Seoul, but quickly changes his mind because he
wants to spend some more time with Deokee. Following this, he takes her to his home and she
cannot stop herself from kissing him. When she does it, Hak-kyu smiles because he finds it
cute.

At night, they secretly go to the amusement park and ride the ferris wheel. One thing leads to
another, and they end up making love inside. Unfortunately, they are spotted by the park's
guard, who spreads the news to the rest of the town. The gossip also reaches Kim, who
becomes devastated to find that her daughter is having pre-marital sex.

As time passes, Hak-kyu and Deokee begin to spend more time together because they appear
to enjoy each other's company. While they are dating, Hak-kyu gives her a pair of high-heeled
shoes that she had been admiring for a few weeks. At home, Hak-kyu helps her put on the
shoes and asks her to try walking. Her beauty and innocence drive him insane, and as a result,
they get intimate once again. While making love, Deokee declares that she will never let him
leave her. She then spends the night at Hak-kyu's house while her mother waits for her at
home.

The next morning, they are having coffee when Hak-kyu receives a call from Dong-woo,
informing him that he is on his way to his place with good news. Hak-kyu decides to meet Dong-
woo in a restaurant as he doesn't want him to know about Deokee. There, Dong-woo informs
Hak-kyu that he discovered the perfect evidence to prove his innocence, and now, the false
accusation against him has been cleared. The news makes Hak-Kyu extremely happy, and he
decides to return to Seoul and resume his work at the university. Later at home, when Hak-kyu
is packing his belongings, Deokee approaches him. She is disappointed to learn that he is
returning to Seoul. In an attempt to stop him from going, Dokee reveals that she is pregnant with
his child. Hearing this, Hak-kyu becomes shocked, and immediately takes her to the obstetrics
to undergo an abrotion. He claims that he doesn't want to take responsibility for the child, and
neither does she. After the procedure is done, Hak-kyu departs for Seoul, ensuring Deokee that
he will call her when he gets settled.

As soon as he returns back home, he meets his wife, who suspects him of having affairs with
other university girls. Hak-kyu then hugs her and makes her feel loved. She sobs, claiming that
she loves him no matter what, but she can't stop overthinking. On the other hand, Deokee
returns home but her mother is mad at her for her unethical behavior.

Several months pass by but Hak-Kyu doesn’t call Deokee, so she decides to pay him a visit at
the university in Seoul. She requests that he reveal everything about them to his wife, but Hak-
kyu lacks the courage to do so. He then asks her to return home after promising to meet her
soon.

One night, while Deokee is cooking at her house, Hak-kyu arrives. Deokee notices him and
rushes outside, leaving the gas running. When she approaches Hak-kyu, he shares his decision
to end their relationship. He also gives her money in exchange for keeping their relationship and
abortion a secret. Deokee is unable to do so because she has truly loved him, so she attempts
to persuade him, but he pushes her away. During their argument, the house curtain catches fire
and slowly burns down the whole house, trapping her mute mother inside. As soon as Deokee
notices this, she rushes to save her mother but fails. At the same time, Hak-kyu receives a
phone call from her daughter, informing him that his wife has locked herself inside the room. He
immediately summons the fire department and rushes back to Seoul. When he returns home,
he discovers that his wife has taken her own life. That night, he feels as if a massive wave has
washed away his life.

Eight years later, Hak-kyu is living a hard life and attempting to flee the past. Despite his
massive successes as a writer, he is still plagued by guilt in his heart. He gambles, drinks,
smokes and sleeps with several girls to avoid his past life, but deep down, he is the same. As a
result of his excessive drinking and smoking habits, his vision starts becoming blurry. One day,
he goes to a doctor to have his eyes checked and learns that he will eventually lose his sight.
The doctor also informs him that there is no cure, but he can postpone it by quitting drinking and
smoking.

Due to his illegal gambling habits and involvement in slush funds, he is forced to resign from the
university. His daughter; Cheong-Yi, has grown up, but her relationship with her father is
strained. Eventually, his life becomes darker day by day. His depression worsens, leading him
to drink and smoke more excessively. And now, his vision is so blurry that he can't recognize
anything.

One day, Deokee pays a visit to Hak-kyu's house with a pancake and looks for his daughter.
Deokee is his new neighbor and she has been keeping her eyes over him for the past eight
years. However, Hak-kyu does not recognize her and invites her inside, believing she is
Cheong-Yi's friend. Deokee introduces herself as Se-Jung and claims that she and Cheong-Yi
are good friends.

The following day, Deokee meets Cheong-Yi, and the two start conversing about their problems.
Cheong-Yi talks about her father and expresses her hatred for him because she believes that
he is the reason why her mother took her own life. However, Deokee advises her to not despise
him because he is ultimately her father. In this way, Deokee, disguised as Se-Jung, manages to
be good friends with Cheong-Yi, so that she can remain close to her father.

With each day passing, Deokee starts visiting the home more often and assists Hak-kyu in
writing his books. She also claims to know the best eye doctor and takes him there. The doctor
tells Hak-kyu that he will most likely be able to regain his sight after surgery, and gives him
some medicine. From that day onwards, Deokee starts helping Hak-kyu with his daily routine
and medication administration, bringing them closer. However, Cheong-Yi does not appear to
be pleased with their closeness.

A few days later, Deokee again takes Hak-kyu to the doctor, who informs him that he is ready
for surgery. Hak-kyu then inquires about the cost to which the doctor insists on discussing it with
his guardian, Deokee. On his way back, he asks Deokee about the surgery cost but the latter
tells him not to worry. However, Hak-kyu is stressed and asks that she drive him to the gambling
house. He then bets small amounts and wins, which makes him feel happy. Following this, he
believes that it's his lucky day, and decides to play with a large sum. However, things take a
turn for the worst, and he loses all his money. Desperate to get back his money, Hak-kyu takes
out a
loan with a high interest rate from an illegal bank, but sadly, he again loses everything.

The next evening, as Cheong-Yi chats with Deokee, she mentions that the latter resembles her
mother; she is caring, sweet, and pretty. However, she does not want Deokee to be her mother.
Hearing this, Deokee assures her that she will not marry her father, and she is only caring for
him. Later, Deokee assists Hak-kyu in shaving his beard and soon, they start getting intimate.
Unfortunately, they are noticed by Cheong-Yi, who becomes devastated to learn of her father’s
illicit relationship. She then enters her room, crying, which alerts the couple that Cheong-Yi has
seen everything. Hak-kyu assures Deokee that everything will be fine as he intends to tell his
daughter about their relationship. He also promises to ther, that they will get married soon.

After a few days, the illegal bankers come to Hak-kyu's house to collect their money, but Hak-
kyu is unable to repay them. As a result, they threaten him by displaying a photograph of his
daughter. When Cheong-Yi finds out about this, she becomes terrified and meets with Deokee.
She shares the entire ordeal to Deokee, and the latter pretends to support her. The next day,
the illegal bankers return to Hak-kyu's house and tell him that he must sell his daughter in order
to pay off his debt. When he refuses, they force him to sign the documents, which mentions that
he is trading his daughter. Before leaving, they give him some money in exchange for his
daughter. Following this, they kidnap and sell Cheong-Yi away. Here, we get to know that it is
Deokee, who is planning all this in order to exact vengeance on Hak-kyu. Infact, she hired the
illegal bankers to threaten Hak-kyu, and the eye doctor to make sure that he never regains his
eyesight.

Six months have passed since the incident, and now, Dokee treats Hak-kyu even worse. One
day, she finally reveals her true identity to him, and mentions that she is doing everything to
make him suffer, just like he did to her eight years back. She even makes out with the eye
doctor at Hak-kyu's house in order to make him feel bad. However, deep down inside, she is not
happy to see him suffer. One morning, while Hak-kyu and Deokee are walking outside, Cheong-
Yi suddenly returns.

Worried, Deokee immediately contacts the illegal banker for help. However, the man reveals
that he can’t do anything about it, as Cheong-Yi has settled all of their debts. Meanwhile,
Cheong-Yi now appears to know everything there is to know about Deokee. She also knows
about Deokee's previous relationship with her father, which is the reason for her mother's death.
Knowing about Deokee's revenge plan, Cheong-Yi decides to repay her with exactly what she
gave to them.

At first, she punishes the eye doctor who caused her father to go blind fast. She then hires
some men and forces Deokee to donate her eyes to Hak-kyu, so that she can experience the
same pain that her father is currently facing. Before that, Deokee is permitted to see Hak-kyu for
one last time.

Hak-kyu and Deokee still appear to be in love. Hak-kyu, who is unaware of the transplant,
mentions that they can start everything all over again. He also apologizes for causing her so
much pain, which creates an emotional moment for the duo. Just then, Cheong-Yi's men knock
both of them out and begin the surgery.

In the next scene, Hak-kyu and Deokee are seen sitting together near a lake. The movie ends
as Hak-kyu looks at Deokee with loving eyes, and expresses his feelings for her.
