Task 2: Using COCA for Collocations

Step 1: Watch the tutorial about how to find and use collocates on COCA:

Step 2: Create a free COCA account.


1. Go to https://www.english-corpora.org/register.asp?n=y.
2. If you have an .edu student email account, use that one. If not, it’s OK to use your personal email
account.
3. Register as an undergraduate student.
4. Confirm your email address.

Step 3: Now, it’s time to try using COCA for word collocations!
1. Sign in to your account at https://www.english-corpora.org/coca/
2. Look up the verb “consume” in the “Word” category, following the steps in the tutorial.

3. Click on “(more)” next to “COLLOCATES” →


4. Identify the most common noun, adjective, verb, and adverb that appears with “consume”:
a. Noun - time
b. Adjective - entire
c. Verb - produce
d. Adverb - less
5. Find one example sentence of consume + the most common noun by clicking the page symbol →

next to the noun. Copy and paste the sentence below:

Example sentence:
[…]And when home sales drop, marketing consumes more time and more money.

6. Based on everything you learned, write your own sentence using the verb “consume”:
When I am stuying maths, I stay tired because this consumes a lot of my time.
