REMEDIATION/ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY in MATHEMATICS 7

NAME: _______________________________________________________ GRADE 7-___________________
DAY 1: REPRESENTING ABSOLUTE VALUE OF A NUMBER ON A NUMBER LINE
REVIEW: INTEGERS
a. What is an integer?
Integers are all negative and positive whole numbers and zero.
Example: Negative numbers: -2, -1
Positive numbers: 3, 4
Zero: 0
b. Who can give other example of integers?

INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT: NUMBER LINE

 These integers/numbers can be best represented using a number line wherein zero (0) is its center.
a. What is a number line?
A horizontal straight line in which the integers are placed in equal intervals.
Example:

MY OWN NUMBER LINE:

b. Based on our example of number line we can see that 1 and -1 has the same distance from zero, we
have also 2 and -2, 3 and -3 and so on. These numbers (1 and -1), (2 and -2), (3 and -3) are what we call
opposites.
Opposites are numbers having the same distance from 0 on a number line but are in opposite
direction.
LET’S TRY! Give the opposite of the following:
1. 10= -10 4. -5=______
2. -8= 8 5. 3=_____
3. 6=_____
c. Now, you may wonder how come that 10=-10, -8=8, 6=-6. Ngaa nag equal sila?
Kay tungod equal ang ila DISTANCE from zero on a number line. Kag ang DISTANSIYA sang
NUMERO halin sa ZERO ginatawag ta nga ABSOLUTE VALUE (∥ ¿.

PRESENTATION: ABSOLUTE VALUE OF A NUMBER

a. What is an absolute value of a number?
 Distance of a number from zero.

TRY YOURSELF!

Represent the following absolute value of a number on a number line.

1. ¿ 6∨¿=6

Since 6 is 6 units from zero, the absolute value of 6 is 6. In symbol, |6|=6

2. |0|=

3. |-3|=

ASSESSMENT:

A. Represent the following value of a number on a number line.

1. ¿ 7∨¿=

2. ¿−6∨¿=

3. ¿ 5∨¿=

B. Give the absolute value of the following numbers:

1. |9|=¿
2. |−19|=¿
3. |200|=¿
