His mother was busy in the kitchen. She saw his son’s unhappy
expression.“Come on, Ken, tell me the trouble,”she said.
Ken answered,“Mother, I don’t want to take the children to the grassland. I want to please myself!”
“Were you told to take the children to the grassland by your Father?”Mother asked.
“Yes. He said I was to take them to play on the grassland, and not to leave there until he came back
from the market.”
“ 66 , what is it you want to do?”
“I want to go with my net down to the Butterfly Valley. There will be lots of butterflies out this
spring day. And the other boys at school are all collecting. They have more than I do.”
“Oh, dear! But I can guess why your father gave those orders. He knew that this is a very busy day
for me,”his mother said.“And as this is market-day at the town, he would be away until dinner time. So,
you see, he has left you in charge. You are in father’s place this morning to guard the farm and all of us,
especially the little kids. Don’t you think it’s an honor to be 67 ?”

“Hi, Charlie! Hi, Jack! Come along! And where’s little Bob? We’re going to the grassland, and I’ll

To be an animal care assistant, you must be in very good health. Sometimes it involves getting
animals out of dangerous s 73 . For example, it’s not always easy to get a cat down from a tree.
Other times, animal care assistants must take a sick animal to the hospital for treatment. These animals
are often in great pain. They are afraid and difficult to catch or c 74 .
An animal d 75 is also called a “vet”. Some vets work for zoos or animals hospitals to make
some sick tigers, elephants and horses better. Others treat some sick animals like dogs and cats. They
take the animals’ temperature, give injections, and take X-rays for sick animals. They also decide what
kind of m 76 a sick animal may need. If an animal weighs too little or looks very w 77 , a vet may
use a feeding tube to make sure it gets enough nutrition from food. It takes many years of higher

D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) (12 分)

Working as a part-time assistant in a shop is a way for young people to earn some extra money. For
me, it is more than twenty dollars per hour.
Like other eighteen-year-old girls, I chose to work in a clothing shop. On the first day, I was
trained to fold and organize platform after platform of clothes. The work didn’t seem easy to me because
everything had to be done in an accurate way. I felt a little impatient because I couldn’t get it right the
first couple of times. The manager told me not to be impatient and taught me skills on how to finish the
work well. After hundreds of tries, I had the clothes folded perfectly. Then it took me thirty minutes to
get them all looking uniform. Now, I fold and organize clothes in the shop every day, and I am able to
do them well. Through this experience, I’ve learned patience can help me in the work.

7
Helping customers and connecting with them are the things I love
most in the shop. About three weeks ago, I helped an old lady who was
looking for a special dress. She told me exactly what she was
picturing—a blue dress with long sleeves and a lace neck. We didn’t
have any such dress, and when I explained that to her, she wasn’t very
happy. Instead of getting impatient, I tried getting to learn about her
interest first. We shared our love of the fashion show. I also asked her what the dress was for, so I could
help her get the clothes she liked. Everything I did worked. She found other items she liked and finally
bought some new blouses and jeans worth of $300. This experience has taught me how to meet
customers’ needs.
I’ve experienced frustrations and challenges in the work. To do well, I must learn to deal with them.
The work experience changed me a lot and helped me in other aspects of my life as well.

78. How old was the writer when she worked in a clothing shop?
.
79. Why did the writer think the work was difficult?
.
80. Who gave the writer a hand and taught her how to finish the work well?
.
81. What was the old lady looking for at first?
.
82. How did the writer manage to meet the customers’ needs in Paragraph 3?
.
83. According to the writer, what changes could help her in other aspects of her life?
(No more than 15 words)
.
