Relationship between Human Errors in Maintenance and Overall Equipment
Effectiveness in Food Industries

The food industry is part of the largest industry in the world as the most basic
human need. Today, equipment with high productivity and performance has been developed
in the food industry. However, human roles and contributions are needed regarding effective
maintenance activities to help the process of cost reduction, productivity improvement, and
maintenance of business profiles.
Maintenance is defined as an important activity to keep a facility in "as built" or
new condition. Maintenance is classified into three categories: preventive (scheduled)
maintenance, corrective (unscheduled) maintenance, and predictive maintenance (during
operation). However, the presence of human error causes a significant decrease in
performance. Human error results in planned operating disruption or damage to equipment
and property. Human error is divided into six categories, including operating errors, assembly
errors, design errors, inspection errors, installation errors, and maintenance errors caused by
poor work environments, improper work tools, poor equipment design, outdated maintenance
manuals, complex maintenance tasks, poorly written maintenance procedures, fatigued
maintenance personnel, inadequate training and experience, and poor work layout.
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is an approach to equipment maintenance
through OEE as a benchmark for initial performance, controlling and monitoring production
equipment productivity, as well as indicators of process drivers and performance
improvements. OEE consists of three main components namely Availability Rate (A) related
to the amount of time for available equipment, Performance Rate (P) which divides the actual
production output of the equipment by theoretical production output, and Quality Rate (Q)
which shows the comparison of defective products with the total products produced. Effective
maintenance is able to increase the utilization of manufacturing systems as much as the
quantity of products produced with good quality. However, maintenance errors caused by
human error are likely to degrade the performance of a technical system. Human error in
maintenance will basically affect availability, equipment, and quality. These three parts are the
main components in OEE. Human error in maintenance affects OEE equipment poorly.
Therefore, human error correlates with availability levels, performance levels and quality levels
against OEE.
This study aims to find out the relationship between human error in maintenance
and OEE. There are four hypotheses in this study that there is no significant relationship
between human error in maintenance and availability rate, maintenance and performance rate,
and product maintenance and quality of OEE, and there is a significant relationship between
human error maintenance and OEE. The population in this study is maintenance personnel
who come from the food industry in Batu Pahat Johor. This research was conducted by survey
methods and research instruments through questionnaires. The trial was conducted before
the questionnaire was distributed to perfect the questionnaire. OEE is calculated using data
from machine availability, machine performance, and product quality. Descriptive analysis and
inference analysis are used in this study to identify and analyze the differences of a variable
among different subgroups. Based on the results of descriptive analysis, it was found that
human error in maintenance had the highest mean of 4.02 while OEE had the lowest mean of
2.22. Normality test shows that data is not normally distributed. Therefore, a non-parametric
test in the form of a Spearmen Correlation test is performed to test the relationship between
human error in machine maintenance and availability, machine performance, and product
quality to OEE.
The results of this study showed a significant association between human error in
maintenance and OEE in the food industry. The research is expected to help production lines
to minimize human error in maintenance and improve OEE. Based on the results of the
correlation test, spearman correlation coefficient values were obtained between the human
error in maintenance (HEM) variable and engine availability of 0.641 and a significant
correlation at the level of 0.01. Sign lower than 0.05 indicates that the relationship between
these two variables is significant. Therefore, HEM is significantly positively correlated with MA
at medium strength levels. In the context of this study, human error in verified care will reduce
the availability of machines. From the correlation analysis obtained the value of the Spearman
correlation coefficient between hem and MP variables of 0.547 and a significant correlation at
the level of 0.01. A positive correlation coefficient value indicates that there is a positive
relationship between HEM and MP with a correlation coefficient value of 0.547 indicating the
strength of the significant medium relationship between the two variables. Therefore, it can be
concluded that HEM has a moderate and significant positive relationship with MP. From the
results of the correlation test obtained the spearman correlation coefficient value between hem
and PQ variables of 0.709 and significant correlation at the level of 0.01. Signs lower than 0.05
indicate that the relationship between these two variables is significant. Therefore, HEM is
significantly positively correlated with MA at a high strength level. Meanwhile, HEM and MA
have a strong relationship. From the correlation analysis obtained the spearman correlation
coefficient value between hem and OEE variables of 0.694 and significant correlation at the
level of 0.01. A positive correlation coefficient value indicates that there is a positive
relationship between HEM and OEE with a correlation coefficient value of 0.694 indicating that
the strength of the relationship is significantly high between the two variables.
The conclusions of this study show a significant association between human error
in maintenance and OEE in the food industry. This means that it is undeniable that human
error will have a bad impact on OEE. Therefore, there are some suggestions aimed at reducing
human error in maintenance and improving OEE. A manager must ensure all maintenance
personnel have undergone proper training on maintenance activities. This will increase the
knowledge, skills and ability of personnel in making the right decisions when carrying out
maintenance activities. Supervision of maintenance activities is useful to detect and identify
errors made by maintenance personnel quickly, as well as respond to all problems in a short
time to minimize the impact of maintenance activity failures and improve OEE. In addition,
standard operating procedures must be written correctly and maintenance personnel must
understand them. This will ensure all maintenance activities are completed in a standard and
appropriate manner to reduce the likelihood of human error in maintenance.
