The events in the short story follow an order. The words first, next, then and finally or
last tell us the correct order. We can also use numbers to arrange them.

Predicting outcomes is telling or guessing what will happen next in the story. Guesses can be
made through: looking for clues in the story or understanding the events through pictures.

A. Copy these sentences in your notebook. Complete the sentence using the words first, next and

It was a Sunday morning. My mother prepared ham and sandwiches for our
picnic. She brought a big mat, a pitcher of juice and a butter for me. We all rode on
our car going to the picnic.
