1. The principal of a large university wants to estimate the average age of Grade 11 students
enrolled during summer. It is known from previous studies that the standard deviation is 2 years.
A sample of 50 students shows that the mean to be 17.4 years. Find the 95% confidence interval
of the population mean.

2. The following are the recorded weight in kilograms of a random sample of 30 male students.
Find the 90% confidence interval of the mean.

29.4 33.5 37.3 33.6 30.7 32.8 29.5 35.7 31.1 30.2
33.4 32.5 29.4 34.3 28.7 29.6 30.0 34.6 35.7 34.1
28.8 30.2 29.5 31.6 34.7 36.2 29.8 31.1 28.5 27.2

3. A researcher of a cardboard manufacturing company would like to know the estimated thickness
of the cardboard the machine produces. How many cardboards should he measured if he wants
to be 99% confident that the estimate is accurate to 1mm. Previous study shows that the
standard deviation is 3 mm.

4. The owner of mobile phone store at Greenhills Shopping Center was not happy when he learned
that the average number of mobile phones sold daily was only 8 mobile phones. He hired of new
seller and told him to tally the daily sales for 20 days. The following are the number of mobile
phones sold for the past 20 days.
9 9 9 8 9 9 11 12 12 16
10 12 8 11 17 18 15 14 17 14
Do the collected data present enough evidence to indicate that the average number of mobile
phones sold daily has increased? Use confidence level of 95%. Assume normality in the
population.
