Art is something that is perennially around us and it is everywhere.

The word art comes from the ancient Latin, ars which means a "craft or specialized form of skill, like
carpentry or smithying or surgery. -Collingwood, 1938

Assumptions of Art

Art is Universal- In every country there is arts. Ex. literary arts like: El filibusterismo, Noli me tangere.

Art is not Nature- Art must reflect reality and man's way of interpreting nature which we can't duplicate
the creation of God. Art is made by person but nature is created by God.

Art involves experience- Ex. Painter cannot paint if he/she can't hold a painter and wouldn't have
experience.

Fundamental Needs for Art

1. Art as expression- expressing ourselves we need art.

2. Art as creation- through art we satisfy our desire in creating things.

Functions of Art

1. Aesthetic Function- it aims to satisfy the cravings of individual in terms of enjoyment.

2. Physical or Utilitarian- it aims to satisfy the desire of individual in objects.

3. Social Function- it aims to satisfy the desire of society.

4. Cultural Function- it aims to satisfy and practice our culture.

ART APPRECIATION: CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION, AND EXPRESSION

THE ROLE OF CREATIVITY IN ART MAKING

CREATIVITY- It is an artist’s trait develop in the course of his life to solve problems or express his/her
feelings. A creative artist is usually gifted with sensitivity toward the world around him.
