ACTIVITY.

1. Axis of Symmetry – the line that splits the graph of a quadratic equation into two mirror images.

2. Latus Rectum – a chord of a conic section that passes through a focus and is parallel to the directrix.

3. Focus – the point in a parabola, lies on the axis of symmetry.

4. Vertex – a corner or point where the lines meet.

5. Directrix – perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of a parabola and does not touch the parabola.

TRIVIA.

One specific example I know that illustrates a parabola is when playing volleyball. A parabolic path is
formed by the ball as it travels to each side of the net, where the players catch and throw the ball back
to each other.

EXERCISE.

3. (x 2)2 8( y 1)

Vertex: (2,1)

Focus: (2,3)

Directrix: y = -1

Axis of Symmetry: x = 2

4. ( y 3)2 12(x 1)

Vertex: (-1,-3)

Focus: (2,-3)

Directrix: x = -4

Axis of Symmetry: y = -3
