Practice assignment 1 CE786A 2022-23 Semester I

This assignment does not require submission of your response

For all problems related to rheological material, assume that the material is linearly visco-elastic.

1. A standard solid model is composed of a Kelvin’s model (spring constant =E1 and dashpot
constant = η) connected with another spring (spring constant E2) in series. At what time(s) the
relaxation modulus will be reciprocal to the creep compliance?

2. A rheological material is modeled as shown. Develop

the governing equation. Predict its creep performance.

3. Stress, as shown below, is applied to a Maxwell model. Predict its strain response at t, for 𝑡 >
𝑡2 .

4. A stress controlled experiment is presented below. Assuming Kelvin’s model, predict its
complete strain response.

5. For a standard solid model with static loading plot between creep modulus (Ecrp) versus time.
Also plot dynamic modulus (Ed) verses 1/ω for dynamic loading on the same graph. Given, E1 =
50 unit, E 2 = 40 unit,  o = 5 unit,  = 100 unit.
6. Stress controlled flexural fatigue test is performed on a rheological (linear visco-elastic) material
below its endurance limit, and experimental data points are obtained. From this available
information, suggest an approach (mention steps only) to predict its relaxation modulus at any
given time. Assume that there is no change in temperature.
7. For Maxwell’s model, show that the phase angle (δ) (for the case of dynamic loading) is
dependent on the loading frequency.
