ACTIVITY 8- Causes, Effects, and Possible solutions to overpopulation.

Using the video as the input, list down/discuss the causes, effects, and possible solutions to
overpopulation.

Overpopulation is when the human population rises to an extent exceeding the carrying
capacity of the ecological setting. The two causes of overpopulation are (1) improving
technology and medicine or (2) a decline in the death rate, which means scientists have come
up with more advanced medicine to treat ill people. These treatments will increase the lives of
these ill people, meaning fewer people will die each year. Although this is a good thing, it will
also cause the issue of overpopulation, which will affect many more people. Technology has
also increased in a way that can help infertile couples have babies; it is called fertility
treatment. The cause # 2 is poverty and lack of family planning. Families living in poverty tend
to have more children because the government gives the family a certain amount of cash
assistance per child. In short, more children equal more money. The reason # 3 is immigration.
Overpopulation happens in developed countries. People in developing countries are more likely
to relocate to places like the United States of America in search of the best medical care,
security education, and employment opportunities.

Now let's talk about the effects of overpopulation and the depletion of resources. The
earth can only produce a certain amount of food and water. As more people burn each year,
there are fewer resources for everyone. This effect also causes conflict between developing
countries because they need resources for their people. The effect # 2 is the degradation of the
environment. As our population rises, there is an overuse of coal, oil, and natural gases. The
effect # 3 rise in unemployment when a country becomes more populated. There will not be
enough jobs for everyone. The effect of the high cost of living and poverty means the price of
food, shelter, and health care will be more expensive. The effect #5 is lack of housing, which
means as the population grows there is less space for houses to be built. Effect #6 is less
learning in classrooms. More people means more children in classrooms. Now how can we
stabilize our population? The number one solution is education. By educating people, we can
help them to understand the effects of overpopulation. Solution # 2 is limiting the number of
children we have. We will have more resources for everyone and less conflict.
