Why do you think it is important to study Ecology in Real Estate Management?

Britannica defines Ecology, also called bioecology, bionomics, or environmental biology,

as the study of the relationships between organisms and their environment.

With the need to develop real estate, which is an essential need for humans to survive,
it is undeniable that these real objects brought with them negative impacts on the
environment or in the ecological landscape. These accentuated environmental damages
such as pollution, greenhouse gas emissions ocean acidification, deforestation (and
other forms of habitat loss or destruction), climate change, and the introduction of
invasive species all work to reduce biodiversity around the globe.

The housing sector, for example, is one of the highest contributors to the degradation of
the environment and the excessive global average consumption rate of energy, whether
it be from electricity or from natural resources (Marshall & Shortle, 2005)

The 05 June 2021 Business Standard article entitled “Let us Leverage Technology in
Real Estate to make a positive impact on Environment”, mentions that the real estate
sector is the highest consumer of energy amongst all other sectors and is also a
growing contributor to CO2 emissions.
 Real Estate consumes 40% global energy annually.
 Buildings contribute to 20% of greenhouse gas emissions.
 The sector uses 2 billion tonnes of raw material i.e., 40% of total of annual global
consumption.
 Buildings use 12% of global freshwater consumption.
 The sector generates 30% of total waste.

In addition, the real estate sector is expected to grow dramatically by 2030, as 60% of
the global population of over 8 billion people will be living in urban environments.

It is important to study ecology along with real estate management in order for us, real
estate practitioners to identify key areas wherein which we can manage our ecosystems
to be able to adapt and survive the increasing severity of climate change.
