HSE DEPARTMENT
REF: KFAA-COM-TBT-07092022 TOOLBOX TALK TOPIC: Earth Works Equipment Operation

Earth Works Equipment Operation

Before beginning any job on the site, it is the responsibility of the site foremen to conduct a SAFETY Toolbox
Talk. The purpose of the SAFETY Toolbox Talk meeting is to ensure that the workers involved are made aware
of the hazards associated with the work and the precautions they must follow.

Powered equipment designed and used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack, or tier material shall normally be operated
on level ground with unrestricted routes of travel.

Extreme care shall be used when tilting dump truck bed while moving forward or backward, particularly when
handling high-tiered loads. No dump trucks shall tilt bed or unload materials on a sloped surface.
Points to remember:

✓ Plan the work to minimize people in the area, control movements from outside the area and
behind the barriers.
✓ Erect barriers to keep the work area separate from other activities.
✓ Establish a one-way system to minimize reversing or use dedicated hammerheads and timber
‘stops’ to restrict plant movements especially near trenches.
✓ Load and tip on a level area. Haul routes to be smooth and compacted; dampen down to
suppress dust.
✓ All trucks must be approved by PMV with full working horns, lights, mirrors etc. PMV will also
assist with vehicle and other transport aspects, e.g., safe loading.
✓ Obey the rules of the road, a loaded truck should have right of way over an empty truck.
✓ Erect useful signs with pictures to identify requirements.
