2012—San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo
This picture shows me I had the best horse in the world
at the time. Regardless of who owned him, Caveman
was fundamentally the best horse there was. He had
the ability, no matter what happened—whether there
was a wall, a crowd, a heel barrier—to let me get to the
same spot on a steer. I could plan to ride to a position
to let a steer go straight that was supposed to step left,
and that steer could go left anyway, and I could still get

literally took care of the rest. And you can see that even
in this fast setup at San Antonio, where I was 3.3 even
in 2012, that I had the chance to ride to a comfortable,
wider position before I had to commit and throw. Kaleb

2012—Reno Rodeo
This shot shows that as I was getting to my ideal position,
Kaleb had the steer roped and was setting him up for me,
which gave me another couple clicks to get there. Now
in 2022, headers can’t afford to do that. By the time I’m
to this spot now, the head rope hits the horns and the
header already has the steer turned because he has to.
If you happen to get there before all that happens, it’s
great, but if you don’t, you never do. Ideally, I’m still trying
to get to this same spot to make the corner, but it doesn’t
happen nearly as often as it used to. I used to hit that
spot, check up and be ready for the header to turn the
steer. The hardest part today—if there’s no heel barrier—
is I can’t just forget my header and take the start I need.
I have to still let the steer leave, but then the header gets
there and turns the steer faster than ever because he

horse lengths behind because my header has pulled the
steer away as soon as the head rope hits.

I roped with Luke Brown there, and we won the day
money on a longer barrier. Huey is so fast, and I
was ahead of Luke when he headed the steer. That
shot looks like that because I was able to be so far
ahead. That was a practice shot. I wish there were
100 Oakdales. I was where I needed to be before the
header was. However far the header reaches, I have
to throw from that far, too. Now, all of a sudden, I’m
so far away from the feet, but he’s legal. You have to
have a fast heel horse. I know that for sure, because
I have a few not as fast horses, too. You only see me
riding Champ and Huey for a reason, even though I
do own seven heel horses.

2021 Lone Star Shootout
This was a run with Clay Tryan. I wasn’t late, but
that steer stepped left. That’s a perfectly good
spot to be in. But if I’d have gone one more stride,
that steer would have gone straight in front of me.
Clay and I hit the barrier together, and he was
already throwing his rope. I honestly don’t know
how you’d create a run in this scenario like we did
in that 2012 picture from San Antonio, because
Clay had to be turning him because we had guys
like Dustin Egusquiza ahead of us in that roping.
We had to be fast, so the position I’m in here
gave me that shot on my next swing, because
that was the only option we had.
Now, the slightest little mistake can really make
you look like a fool. You’ve got to ride to a spot
to throw as soon as your header gets the steer
legal, but that spot can get you in trouble unless
everything goes right. In 2012 with Driggers, that
stuff could happen and it wasn’t so bad because I
could be far enough away from the steer and not

Only places like the Bob Feist and Oakdale allow for me to ride the position I’m most comfortable in—wider, far-
ther up the arena—like I could at the start of my career. My left hand is picked up, my left elbow is up. My chest
is out, and I’m ready to throw right now. The shot is set up, because that roping gave me time to beat my header.
The steer was stepping up to the right, and I was there. I had time to get up there and get around—which makes
it most like a 2012 picture. n

My son, Treston, competed in junior high rodeo this last year, and we were careful to make sure he was mounted

The day, in fact, did come together, though the written agenda

Rachel has taught Martin about military customs and culture
while, in return, Martin has shared with Rachel the teachings
of his Navajo culture. On the morning of the clinic, they pull
his jacket from a chair and explain the symbolism of the circular
design embroidered across the back.
“Everything leads to center, to home,” Martin said.
He explained that Navajo culture is matriarchal and the
significance of the familial clans within the tribe. That the
Navajo language, which was once forbidden, if lost, will lead to
a great ending and, perhaps, the inability to return home.
As this particular group gathered, however, almost all
demonstrated a knowledge of the language and gave voice to
their clan and home, including Jarvis Russette of Montana’s

Lions of longevity
Pros weigh in on the magic sticks with staying power.
—By Julie Mankin
What keeps elite heading horses so sound of body and mind they can live
a full decade on the highway? Only a handful have done it. It’s an even
shorter list than the number of long-lasting heel horses (covered in our
next issue). But we picked some brains on just how the likes of Scooter
and Walt, Marty and Bob have done what they do for so long.

Innate
Today’s top 15 look around and agree Clay Tryan’s had more long-timers than any-
body. Is it coincidence that the three-time World Champ is also a four-time reserve
world champ and the high-money BFI leader?
“I’d like to tell you I know something that other people don’t about finding horses
that last, but no,” Tryan said. “It’s really just a horse that wants to be good. And you
know when you ride him, because he’s not hard to keep working.”
Of course, Precious Speck—the Hall-of-Famer and four-time Head Horse of the
Year known as Walt—belonged to Tryan’s brother, Travis, but Walt took both brothers
to the 2001 NFR after packing them to 100 rodeos—a piece—that season. In 10 years,
Walt won more than $2 million and 15 NFR go-round buckles under the Tryans (plus
a couple under Trevor Brazile, too), and was going strong at 20 until he died while
being warmed up for slack at Clovis, California.
For Clay Tryan, Thumper—the crop-eared 2005 PRCA Head Horse of the Year
Dockalickin—was also tough as hell, lasting at least six years. He also got five years and
a season earnings record out of Bear’s Cash Partner, Cate. He got 11 years out of 2015
PRCA Head Horse of the Year “Dew” The Dash. Even his current 17-year-old sorrel,
Cee How Nifty (Johnson), is packing Tryan for the sixth year.
He can play the lucky card, but Tryan has been quoted in this magazine saying he’s
“not a horse-walker guy” and actually rides his good ones constantly to catch soreness
right off the bat. He keeps them in his control leaving the box to help avoid injury, and
the Montana native never overuses one. He makes practice easy on his good ones so
they keep enjoying it.
But to some extent, there’s also luck of the draw. Tryan and Smith—the pair of Clays
with five gold buckles between them—agree that humans have no hand in what truly
keeps a horse going.
“Those horses that have lasted the longest at a high level, they’re a different kind of
horse,” Clay Smith said. “They have so much heart that they keep trying. You can’t
breed that into them or train that into them.”

THE TEAM ROPING
TIES THAT BIND
The Class of 2022
There could be no greater compliment in a cowboy career than being immortalized with
induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. It’s an honor reserved for a very rare few who
stand above the rest in their contributions to the sport. Ironically in a game where confi-
dence is a critical component of success, having your name etched in stone for the rest of
time has been described by all fortunate enough to experience the feat firsthand as the most
humbling honor of all. Four members of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022 have

“There’s been so many women fighting for it to get where it is and I think the whole end game
is us wanting it to be in the NFR as an added event. We don’t want to take away from any other
events. We just want to be part of the rodeo. So that’s our goal.
