POLSCI – I
Explain exhaustively the Cavite Mutiny and
execution.
Cavite Mutiny, (Jan. 20, 1872), a brief uprising of 200 Filipino troops and workers at the
Cavite arsenal, became the excuse for Spanish repression of the primary Philippine
nationalist movement. Ironically, the tough reaction of the Spanish authorities served
ultimately to promote the nationalist cause. The Spanish rule under the hands of Gov.
Rafael de Izquierdo magnified the event and use it against the Filipinos who are cried
for immediate and major reforms in the government. Some of the Filipino revolutionists
were seized and accused of the reason for the uprising. Some Filipino intellectuals were
seized and accused of complicity with the mutineers. After a brief trial, three priests,
Father Jose Burgos, Father Jacinto Zamora, and Father Mariano Gómez were publicly
executed. It was the became the martyrdom of the three priests that was the gateway to
awakening the long dream of Philippine independence. It was then the charges of
treason and sedition the reason for GOMBURZA’s execution. The Spanish clergy
connected the priest to the mutiny was part of a conspiracy to stifle the movement of the
secular priest who desired to have their parishes instead of being assistants to the
regular friars.

The Cavite Mutiny was dubbed one of the grand conspiracies in the history of the
Philippines. The abolition of the rights enjoyed by the workers of the Cavite Arsenal with
regards to the exemption from the tribute was the cause of the revolution. Moreover, the
Cavite mutiny is not just because of the labor issue but also for the reason of the simple
and weak argument that leads to their extensive uprising. Furthermore, the Polos Y
Servicios was an added reason for the uprising in the Cavite Arsenal which was already
present before the coming of the Spaniards. Lastly, the execution of the three martyr
priests was not mainly because of labor issues but was because of the alleged grounds
of treason and sedition to the Spanish rule. The widespread circulation of the events
was the suspected main reason for the uprising according to the point of view of Gov.
Izquierdo.
